We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 2nd, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/belfoed01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ed Belfour<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Ed Belfour Signs With Stars<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a> land the free agent goalie after coming off a division title. Belfour goes 37-12-10 with a 1.88 goals-against average in his first season with the Stars. &#8220;Eddie the Eagle&#8221; leads Dallas to the President&#8217;s Trophy. The Stars finish with the best record again in 1998-99 and win their first Stanley Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Belfour signs with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> exactly five years later as a free agent. He wins his 400th game and later finished with 446, which was second to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roypa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Roy<\/a><\/strong>. Belfour also ties a post-season record in 2004 with three shutouts in one series.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1969: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kellyre01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Kelly<\/a><\/strong> is named the new head coach of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>. The Hockey Hall of Famer replaces <strong>George Sullivan<\/strong> behind the bench.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Detroit Red Wings<\/a> sign veteran <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/robitlu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luc Robitaille<\/a><\/strong> after his second stint with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>. Robitaille goes on to score 30 goals and help the team win a Stanley Cup in 2001-02.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002:<\/strong> Detroit signs veteran goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/josepcu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Curtis Joseph<\/a><\/strong> from the Leafs. &#8220;CuJo&#8221; lasts two seasons in Hockeytown before going to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phoenix Coyotes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> sign free agent forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gelinma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Gelinas<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> The league announces the retirement of longtime officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stewapa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Stewart<\/a>, Gerard Gauthier and Wayne Bonney.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2011:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> New York Rangers<\/a> ink <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richabr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brad Richards<\/a><\/strong> to a nine-year deal. The former Conn Smythe winner plays three seasons on Broadway and scores 56 goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2017: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/priceca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carey Price<\/a><\/strong> signs an eight-year extension to stay with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>. The Vancouver native&#8217;s contract now runs through the 2025-26 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marlepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Marleau<\/a><\/strong> ends his 10-year stint with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> to sign with Toronto.
