We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for June 27th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ekblaaa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Ekblad<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Aaron Ekblad Goes No. 1 to Panthers<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2014:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida Panthers<\/a> select the Barrie Colts defenceman with the top pick in Philadelphia. Ekblad was one of the handful of players that were granted exceptional player status in juniors. The Windsor, Ontario native is the first defenceman to earn that distinction. He scored 23 goals and 53 points in the 2013-14 with the Colts.<\/p>\n<p>His 12 goals and 39 points were enough to earn the Calder Trophy for top rookie in 2015. Ekblad also made the All-Star team that season and also in 2016. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a> select <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/reinhsa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sam Reinhart<\/a> <\/strong>while the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> take <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/draisle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leon Draisaitl<\/a><\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bennesa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sam Bennett<\/a> goes fourth to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1950: <span id=\"token-2F4F6E3A59A38383D499D\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lalonne01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Newsy Lalonde<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-BECF0F644AAAE1FC7B2B1\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malonjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Malone<\/a><\/span>, Scotty Davidson, Mike Grant, Si Griffis, Charles Drinkwater, George Richardson<\/strong> and <strong>Harry Trihey<\/strong> are all selected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. <strong>Frank Patrick<\/strong> also gets a nod in the Builders category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1972: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Hull<\/a><\/strong> leaves the NHL and signs with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> of the newly formed World Hockey Association. He signs a deal of $250,000 per season for the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong> Edmonton names <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/greente01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ted Green<\/a><\/strong> as the team&#8217;s new head coach. He replaces <strong>John Muckler<\/strong> behind the bench.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> draft <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lecavvi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vincent Lecavalier<\/a><\/strong> with the first overall choice. He becomes the youngest team captain in history two years later at 19 years, 314 days. Lecavalier helps Tampa win its only Stanley Cup in 2004. He wins the Rocket Richard Trophy in 2006-07 and retires in 2016 with 949 points (421 goals, 528 assists).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> add <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/coffepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Coffey<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> for a fifth-round pick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quinnpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Quinn<\/a><\/strong> steps down at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> general manager. He decides to stay on as the team&#8217;s head coach. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fergujo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Ferguson<\/a>, Jr.<\/strong> will eventually be hired in Aug.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004:<\/strong> The St. Louis Blues acquire goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lalimpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Lalime<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa Senators<\/a>.
