We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for June 26th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a> Drafted First by Capitals<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2004:<\/strong> The Russian winger goes first to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> at the 2004 NHL Draft in Raleigh, N.C. He&#8217;d have to wait until 2005-06 to debut thanks to the lockout. However, he scored 52 goals and won the Calder Trophy for top rookie. Ovechkin has three Hart Trophies for league MVP and a Stanley Cup. He&#8217;s the first Russian to reach 500 goals made the 700 club in Feb. 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Longtime rival <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malkiev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evgeni Malkin<\/a><\/strong> goes second to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>. His resume has a Calder in 2007, three Stanley Cups and a 2009 Conn Smythe. Ovechkin would get a Conn Smythe in 2018 when the Capitals finally won the Cup<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1993: <span id=\"token-69AF0706A46F3D2184DB7\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/daiglal02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexandre Daigle<\/a> <\/span><\/strong><span id=\"token-69AF0706A46F3D2184DB7\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">is drafted first overall by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa Senators<\/a>. Daigle gets 20 goals in 51 points in his rookie campaign. However, he ends up with 129 goals in 616 games for his career. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/prongch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Pronger<\/a><\/strong> is taken second by the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Hartford Whalers<\/a> and becomes a Hall of Famer in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> The newly minted<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Atlanta Thrashers<\/a> take <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stefapa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrik Stefan<\/a><\/strong> with the first overall pick. However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a> strike gold with twins <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sedinda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Sedin<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sedinhe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henrik Sedin<\/a><\/strong> at second and third, respectively. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> unearth a gem in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/z\/zettehe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henrik Zetterberg<\/a><\/strong> with the 210th overall pick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001:<\/strong> Former <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> defenceman<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bourqra01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Bourque<\/a><\/strong> retires after 22 seasons in the league. Bourque gets his elusive ring and retires with more goals (410), assists (1,169), and points (1,579) than any blueliner in NHL history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> select <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcdavco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor McDavid<\/a><\/strong> with the top pick of the draft. McDavid wins the scoring crown in his second and third seasons in the league. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a> get a nice consolation prize in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/eicheja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Eichel<\/a><\/strong> from Boston University. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stromdy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dylan Strome<\/a>,<\/strong> who would become a teammate of McDavid, goes third to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arizona Coyotes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oreewi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willie O&#8217;Ree<\/a><\/strong> is one of six names added to the Hall of Fame. O&#8217;Ree is the first black player in the league and a longtime diversity ambassador. Commissioner <strong>Gary Bettman<\/strong> is added in the Builder category. Other inductees are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brodema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Brodeur<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stlouma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin St. Louis<\/a><\/strong>, Soviet player<strong> Alexander Yakushev<\/strong> and women&#8217;s player <strong>Jayna Hefford<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2019:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Florida Panthers<\/a> goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/luongro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roberto Luongo<\/a><\/strong> calls it a career after 19 season.
