Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for June 23rd, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Wayne Gretzky Selected for Hall of Fame<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> great is named to the Hall of Fame. Gretzky has the three-year waiting period waived to be part of the Class of 99. He joins referee <strong>Andy van Hellemond<\/strong> and longtime NHL referee and hockey executive<strong> Ian &#8220;Scotty&#8221; Morrison.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Great One retired only two months earlier after his third season in New York. Some of his records include career marks in goals (894), assists (1,963) and points (2,857). He also holds the single-season records in all three categories.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1975:<\/strong> The Kings sign free agent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dionnma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcel Dionne<\/a><\/strong> after obtaining him and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crashba01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bart Crashley<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. Detroit gets <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malonda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dan Maloney<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/harpete01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Harper<\/a><\/strong> as compensation. Dionne plays a dozen years for Los Angeles and gets 100 points in seven seasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> fire head coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=murphmi01,murphmi02&amp;search=Mike+Murphy&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Murphy<\/a><\/strong> and replace him with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quinnpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Quinn<\/a><\/strong> three days later.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/waddedo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Don Waddell<\/a><\/strong> is named the first general manger of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atlanta Thrashers<\/a>. He served as an assistant general manger with the Red Wings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Wild<\/a> trade <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vernomi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Vernon<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> in exchange for the rights to <strong>Dan Cavanaugh<\/strong> and an eighth-round pick in either 2000 or 2001.<\/p>\n<p>The Wild and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blue-jackets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> also hold their expansion drafts in Calgary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001:<\/strong> The Thrashers take <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kovalil01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ilya Kovalchuk<\/a><\/strong> with the top pick of the 2001 NHL Draft. He&#8217;s the first Russian to be drafted with the top overall pick. Kovalchuk scores 29 goals in his first season and has two 52-goal seasons with the team. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> take <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/spezzja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Spezza<\/a><\/strong> with the second choice as part of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/y\/yashial01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexei Yashin<\/a><\/strong> deal with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Boston Bruins<\/a> name <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sullimi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Sullivan<\/a><\/strong> as their new head coach.
