We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for June 22nd, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lindrer01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Lindros<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Eric Lindros Drafted First by Quebec<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quebec Nordiques<\/a> select Lindros with the first overall pick of the 1991 NHL Draft. Lindros said he would never play for the club, citing ownership. The Memorial Cup winner with the Oshawa Generals would stay in the CHL and play for the 1992 Canadian Olympic team while he waited.<\/p>\n<p>Quebec worked out trades with both the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers. The case would go arbitration and the Flyers would be awarded Lindros. However, the Nordiques did get<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/duchest01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Duchesne<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hextaro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Hextall<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/huffmke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kerry Huffman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/riccimi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Ricci<\/a>,<\/strong> the rights to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/forsbpe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Forsberg<\/a><\/strong>, $15 million and their 1992 and 1993 first-rounders and $15 million. Forsberg would become a vital part of the team&#8217;s success when they moved to Colorado.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Eric Lindros- 1991 NHL Draft\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GXxoAxrCNfY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1938:<\/strong> The Montreal Maroons withdraw from the league making it a seven-team circuit. This comes three years after beating the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> in the Stanley Cup Final. The only team left in the city is the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>1977:<\/b>\u00a0<strong><span id=\"token-4F59465149AA682689696\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">John Ziegler<\/span><\/strong> is named the fourth president in NHL history, replacing <strong>Clarence Campbell<\/strong>. Ziegler serves for 15 years and oversees the merger between the NHL and WHA and helps the league set up for expansion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1982: Mike Illitch<\/strong> buys the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> from<strong> Bruce Norris<\/strong> for $8 million. He helps turn the team into a perennial Stanley Cup contender. The Red Wings win four Stanley Cups from 1997-2008.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1993: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsed01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eddie Johnston<\/a><\/strong> returns to coaching after 10 years away. He becomes the new head coach of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/trottbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bryan Trottier<\/a><\/strong> later joins as an assistant coach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> New Jersey Devils<\/a> win their first Stanley Cup Final home game, 5-2, in Game 3 over Detroit. New Jersey scores four times in just over 28 minutes to take a 3-0 series lead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1996:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phoenix Coyotes<\/a> acquire future Hall of Famer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gartnmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Gartner<\/a><\/strong> from the Maple Leafs.
