We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for June 21st, featuring <strong>Barry Trotz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Barry Trotz Joins New York Islanders<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> sign the former <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/predators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nashville Predators<\/a> coach to a five-year deal. Trotz is fresh off winning the Capitals their first Stanley Cup in five games over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/knights\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a>. The move comes three days after he resigns from Washington after the two sides couldn&#8217;t reach an extension.<\/p>\n<p>Trotz becomes the first coach since <strong>Mike Keenan<\/strong> to not return to a team after winning a Stanley Cup. Keenan helped the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> end their 54-year drought with a win in the 1994 Final. The Islanders have made the playoffs the last two seasons under Trotz.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1996:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> obtain<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/i\/iafraal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Iafrate<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a>. Boston gets <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/odgerje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Odgers<\/a><\/strong> and a future draft pick in exchange.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> The NHL approves 4-on-4 overtime and gives a point to both teams if a game is tied after 60 minutes. This change did not apply to the postseason.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> hire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hlinkiv01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ivan Hlinka<\/a><\/strong> as their new head coach. He&#8217;s the second European born and trained person to get a head coaching job in the league. The Czech-born coach is second behind <strong>Alpo Suhonen.<\/strong> He reaches the conference final in his first season, but is fired four games into the 2001-02 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> Pittsburgh selects <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fleurma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc-Andre Fleury<\/a><\/strong> with the top pick on the 2003 NHL Draft in Nashville, Tenn. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> take centre<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/staaler01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Staal<\/a><\/strong> with the second selection. All 30 players taken in the opening round see NHL action, with 27 playing at least 240 career games.<\/p>\n<p><b>2013: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vigneal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alain Vigneault<\/a><\/strong> becomes the Rangers new head coach. He leads the team to the Stanley Cup Final in 2013-14 and the to President&#8217;s Trophy in 2014-15. The Rangers previous head coach <strong>John Tortorella<\/strong> is hired by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>. Vancouver fired Vigneault earlier in the off-season.<\/p>\n<p>2019: The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> take <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hugheja02,hugheja03&amp;search=Jack+Hughes&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Hughes<\/a><\/strong> with the top overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kakkoka01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kaapo Kakko<\/a><\/strong> is selected second by the Rangers while <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dachki01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirby Dach<\/a><\/strong> is picked third by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>.
