We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for June 10th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laflegu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Lafleur<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Guy LaFleur Taken No. 1 By Canadiens<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1971:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Montreal Canadiens<\/a> select Lafleur with the first overall pick of the amateur draft. &#8220;The Flower&#8221; is coming off a banner year with Quebec of the QMJHL with 130 goals in 62 games. He would prove to a vital contributor to the Habs dynasty of the late 1970s that saw him win five Stanley Cups.<\/p>\n<p>Montreal also landed another Hall of Famer in the second round when it selected <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/robinla01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larry Robinson<\/a><\/strong>. He was selected 20th overall and earned a total of 10 titles between his playing and coaching days.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1973:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> hire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/arboual01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Arbour<\/a><\/strong> as head coach. Arbour would lead the team to four straight Stanley Cups from 1980-83 and would retire as the winningest coach in NHL history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1989: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong> wins his record ninth Hart Trophy in his first season with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1996: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kruppuw01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Uwe Krupp<\/a><\/strong> scored 4:31 into the third overtime as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> win their first Stanley Cup. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roypa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Roy<\/a><\/strong> stops 63 shots in a 1-0 Game 4 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida Panthers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/ludwicr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Ludwig<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s first playoff goal in 11 years helps the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a> win Game 2, 4-2, over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/arnotja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Arnott<\/a><\/strong> scores 8:20 into the second overtime as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> win their second Stanley Cup. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stevesc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Stevens<\/a><\/strong> wins the Conn Smythe as the Devils beat the Stars, 2-1, in Game 6.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hasekdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dominik Hasek<\/a><\/strong> becomes the first goalie to get a shutout in all four rounds of the same post-season. He stops 17 shots as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> blank the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>, 3-0, in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brett Hull<\/a><\/strong> also scores his 100th post-season goal and coach <strong>Scotty Bowman<\/strong> earns his 35th win the Stanley Cup final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2011: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/luongro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roberto Luongo<\/a><\/strong> gets his second 1-0 shutout of the Stanley Cup final in Game 5. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a> beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> thanks to <span id=\"token-8083BDC83D93A56FC1FAD\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lapiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maxim Lapierre<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s goal and Luongo&#8217;s 31 saves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2016:<\/strong> The great <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a><\/strong> passes away at the age of 88. &#8220;Mr. Hockey&#8221; won the Hart and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rossar01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art Ross<\/a><\/strong> Trophies six times and the Stanley Cup four times.
