We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for May 19th, featuring the 1973-74 <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>1973-74 Philadelphia Flyers First Expansion to Win Cup<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1974: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/macleri01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick MacLeish<\/a><\/strong> scores a first-period, power-play goal as the Flyers win Game 6, 1-0, over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/parenbe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bernie Parent<\/a><\/strong> makes 30 saves to win the Conn Smythe as Philadelphia is the first expansion to win a title. Parent finishes with a 12-5 mark and 2.02 goals-against-average.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oiOtLNa7kU0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Stanley Cup if the first of two straight for the Flyers. They&#8217;d win the division title four years in a row starting the next season. Philadelphia has reached the Final seven more times, but have not hoisted a third Stanley Cup.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1984:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> start a dynasty with a 5-2 Game 5 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong> gets a goal and an assist to dethrone the four-time defending champs. Edmonton goes on to win the Cup four times in five years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mattest01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephane Matteau<\/a><\/strong> scores the first of two double-overtime goals as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>, 3-2. Matteau helps the Rangers win Game 3 at 6:13 of the second OT.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/flahewa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wade Flaherty<\/a><\/strong> makes 56 saves in his second post-season start for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Jose Sharks<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitnra01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Whitney<\/a><\/strong> scores 1:54 into the second OT as the Sharks beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a>, 5-4, in Game 7 of round one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1996: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/coffepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Coffey<\/a><\/strong> becomes the highest-scoring defenceman in post-season history with two goals. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> blueliner scores twice a 3-2 Game 1 OT loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2008: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/osgooch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Osgood<\/a><\/strong> makes 28 saves as the Red Wings reach the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in six years. Detroit downs the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a>, 4-1, in Game 6 of the Western Final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2012: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kreidch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Kreider<\/a><\/strong> sets a record for most playoff goals scored by a player that hasn&#8217;t played a regular season game.
