When the Vegas Golden Knights acquired Robin Lehner on February 24th they knew they were getting an excellent goalie, but is he just a backup? He could very well be a starter with almost any NHL team, and while premier starter Marc-Andre Fleury will be 36-years-old the end of November, he’s still the number-one netminder.

That puts Lehner’s status up in the air… or does it? We all know that even as skilled and amazing that Fleury is, his age will start to creep up on him. Having an insurance policy with Lehner to step in when that transpires is something the Vegas management was considering when they traded for him.

While the Golden Knights got off easy by having the Chicago Blackhawks pick up all but $1.4 million of Lehner’s cap hit, he’s still going to require something north of the $5 million AAV he was being paid before being traded. The Vegas club would need to do some juggling with their cap space, and it seems that Lehner may want to test the market.

Here’s our NHL comic captions photo for Lehner.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – MARCH 03: Robin Lehner #90 of the Vegas Golden Knights takes an inflatable doughnut, signifying a shutout win, from the Golden Knights mascot Chance the Golden Gila Monster after the team’s 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils at T-Mobile Arena on March 3, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has toned down his penalty minutes over his 10-year NHL stint. He still averages 1.4 minutes in the penalty box each game. Reaves is that physical presence every team needs to some degree since fighting has really decreased in the league. So, Reaves can still take out the body by averaging 3.36 hits a game in his career.

He will become an unrestricted free agent after this season and signed a two-year, $5.55 million contract. That may be a bit of overpayment by the Golden Knights since he has only contributed eight goals and seven assists in 71 games this season. Yet, he has a role and he fills it expertly. He protects the high scoring forwards on this team and not many opponents will challenge him with his 6-foot-1, 225-pound frame. That is if they are smart.

He may be re-signed but with someone like Lehner still needing additional funds from the budget, Reaves may become expendable.

I wouldn’t volunteer to tell him that though, he loves being in Vegas.

As we mentioned, Reaves isn’t afraid to drop the gloves. Here’s our NHL comic captions photo for him.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – FEBRUARY 17: Linesman Jonny Murray holds Ryan Reaves #75 of the Vegas Golden Knights back from Garnet Hathaway #21 of the Washington Capitals after the two teams scuffled in the third period of their game at T-Mobile Arena on February 17, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Max accumulated a Corsi For of 59.0 percent and a Relative Corsi of +6.0 in 2019-20. That means things happen when he’s on the ice for nearly 18 minutes a game.

Pacioretty signed a four-year, $7 million AAV deal right after being traded to the Vegas club. He seems to be well worth it thus far. He’s thrown in 32 goals and 34 assists for 66 points this season. He has also tallied eight power-play goals to add to his contributions. He’s no doubt a key player which makes the Golden Knights a threat to win a Stanley Cup in the near future. He had five 30-goal or better seasons while with the Montreal Canadiens and has fit in well with his linemate Mark Stone. The duo has scored 53 goals between them making it difficult to know which player to cover.

Even Max Pacioretty seems shocked that he is the leading scorer on this Vegas team.
