Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for April 22nd, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sundspa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrik Sundstrom<\/a><\/strong>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Patrik Sundstrom Has Playoff-Record Eight Points<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> forward sets a post-season record for most points in a game with eight. His three goals and five assists led the Devils to a 10-4 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a>. Sundstrom would break <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s record to help New Jersey win Game 4 of the Patrick Division Final.<\/p>\n<p>Gretzky would achieve seven points three times in his career before Sundstrom broke the mark. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a><\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> would equal the Swede&#8217;s record during the 1989 playoffs.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1945:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> hold off the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> to win the Stanley Cup in seven games. Toronto wins 2-1 to avoid blowing a three-games-to-none series lead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1971:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota North Stars<\/a> are the first expansion to beat an Original Six team in the playoffs as they beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>, 6-3, in Game 2 of the semifinals. The Canadiens would still win the series and go on to win the Stanley Cup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sittlda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darryl Sittler<\/a><\/strong> ties the post-season record with five goals as the Leafs beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>, 8-5. Sittler ties <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maurice Richard<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s record as Toronto wins Game 6 of the quarterfinals. The Flyers would win Game 7.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1983:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> win their 14th straight post-season series as they top the rival <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> in six games. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gorinbu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Butch Goring<\/a><\/strong> scores twice as the Isles win 5-2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gardibr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bruce Gardiner<\/a><\/strong> is the 49th player to score his first post-season goal in OT as the Ottawa Senators beat New Jersey, 2-1. His goal helps the Sens take the series opener.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roypa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Roy<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s career comes to an end as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brunean01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Brunette<\/a><\/strong> helps the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Wild<\/a> stun the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a>. Roy would retire a month later after the 3-2 overtime loss.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2016:<\/strong> The Islanders win their first Game 5 after losing their last 11. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quineal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alan Quine<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s marker helps New York beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida Panthers<\/a>, 3-2, for its first Game 5 win since 1987.<\/p>\n<p><b>2017: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/paajama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Magnus Paajarvi<\/a><\/strong> scores nearly halfway through the first overtime period as the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> St. Louis Blues<\/a> beat Minnesota in five games.
