The deal, which carries a $2.8 million salary-cap hit, was announced by the club\u2019s general manager and Alternate Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kekalja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarmo Kekalainen<\/a>, today. During that time he has an average save percentage of .908 and three shutouts. He was originally drafted in the 3rd round, 62nd overall by the Blue Jackets in the 2012 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n<p>This season is Korpisalo&#8217;s first year in the starting goaltender role. He has won 19 of his 37 games and posted a .911 save percentage, 1 percentage point higher than league average. He has also set single-season career records in wins, saves, shutouts, goals-against-average (tied), minutes played, and games played.<\/p>\n<p>His performance this year earned him the opportunity to play in his first NHL All-Star game with the Metropolitan Division. However, a knee injury prevented him from taking part in the league\u2019s February showcase and derailed his regular season. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/12\/30\/columbus-blue-jackets-joonas-korpisalo-injured\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He missed 25 games between the 29<sup>th<\/sup> December 2019 and the 24<sup>th<\/sup> February 2020.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>GM, Kekalainen, described Joonas as a \u201cyoung, talented goaltender with a great work ethic and desire to succeed.\u201d He also added, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/bluejackets\/news\/korpisalo-extension-june-9\/c-289856984\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cwe are very excited to see his continued development and improvement moving forward.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What This Means for the Future<\/h3>\n<p>Columbus have now signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2020\/04\/05\/elvis-merzlikins-korpisalo-columbus-blue-jackets-conundrum\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first of their two goaltenders, destined for restricted free agency this summer.<\/a> Korpisalo and his partner, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/merzlel01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elvis Merzlikins<\/a><\/strong>, have both impressed this season for a Blue Jackets team that have found goal-scoring difficult. Columbus were third-bottom in goals for at the season\u2019s pause. Despite this, they still held the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference, albeit by virtue of playing more games than the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> below them.
