Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for April 13th, featuring <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a>.<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Alex Ovechkin is Second Rookie to 50 Goals, 100 Points<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2006:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Washington Capitals<\/a> rookie is the second first-year player to get 50 goals and 100 points in first campaign. He scores in a 5-3 loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atlanta Thrashers<\/a> at Phillips Arena. The dynamic Russian winger would finish his rookie season with 52 goals and 106 points.<\/p>\n<p>Ovechkin is the second rookie to score 50 goals in his first year.<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Winnipeg Jets<\/a> rookie <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/selante01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teemu Selanne<\/a><\/strong> was the first to do so back in 1992-93 when he scored 76. Ovechkin has reached 50 goals in eight seasons, all with the Capitals.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1927:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Ottawa Senators<\/a> win the Stanley Cup after beating the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a>, 3-1, in Game 4. It would be the last Cup Final game in Ottawa until June 2007.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1940: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hextabr01,hextabr02&amp;search=Bryan+Hextall&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bryan Hextall<\/a><\/strong> scores 2:07 into overtime to give the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> a 3-2 win and the Stanley Cup. The win over the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> would be the last title for New York until 1994.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1944: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/blaketo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toe Blake<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s four assists help the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Montreal Canadiens<\/a> win their first title in 14 seasons. The Habs would sweep the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> with a 5-4 win in Game 4.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1982: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/toneljo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Tonelli<\/a><\/strong> helps the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> get past the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 5 of the Patrick Division semifinals. He gets the tying a game-winner in the 4-3 overtime game.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lessama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lessard<\/a><\/strong> makes 40 saves as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> stun the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a>, 7-4, to win the Smythe Division semi series in give games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kerrti01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tim Kerr<\/a><\/strong> scores four straight goals as the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> rally past the Rangers, 6-5, in Game 3 of the Patrick semis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s two assists get him his first scoring title 12 years. However, the Penguins would lose 7-3 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hartford Whalers<\/a> would beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> 2-1 in the final game at the Hartford Civic Center.
