Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for April 5th, featuring <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/orrbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Orr<\/a>.<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Also Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/03\/15\/today-in-hockey-history-boston-bruins-bobby-orr-nets-100th-point-of-1969-70-season\/\" target=\"_self\">When Bobby Orr Hit a MASSIVE Milestone in 1969-70 Season<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Bobby Orr is First Defenceman to Win Scoring Crown<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1970:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> defender gets a second-period assist in a 2-1 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. Orr becomes the first at his position to win the league&#8217;s scoring title. He finishes with 33 goals and 87 assists for 120 points in 76 games.<\/p>\n<p>Orr seals a great season with the game-winning goal of the Stanley Cup Final against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>. It would be the first title for Boston since 1941. He&#8217;d win the scoring title again in 1974-75 with 136 points in his final full season.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1919:<\/strong> The Stanley Cup Final is officially canceled as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> defenceman <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/halljo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Hall<\/a><\/strong> dies of influenza. It&#8217;s the only year the Cup is not awarded as the series with the Seattle Metropolitans ends tied at two.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1932: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jacksbu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Busher Jackson<\/a><\/strong> is the first player to score three goals in one post-season period. The Leafs beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers,<\/a> 6-4, in Game 1 of the Final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1955: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lindste01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ted Lindsay<\/a><\/strong> scores four goals as the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Detroit Red Wings<\/a> rout the Canadiens, 7-1. It&#8217;s the first four-goal game in final since the league took control of the cup in 1926. Lindsay&#8217;s performance helps Detroit take Game 2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1980: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dionnma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcel Dionne<\/a><\/strong> wins his only scoring title with two assists in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> 5-3 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> star <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a><\/strong> announces he will retire at the end of the season. He&#8217;d return to the league in Dec. 2000 and would play until 2006.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2007:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> New Jersey Devils<\/a> goalie <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brodema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Brodeur<\/a><\/strong> sets a record for wins in a season with 48. He&#8217;d help the Devils to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> It was a wild day as 11 of the 12 NHL games are decided by one goal. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sedinda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Sedin<\/a><\/strong> scores off a feed from<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sedinhe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henrik Sedin<\/a><\/strong> in the final home game for the twins.
