We\u2019ll <\/span>remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for April 2nd, featuring<\/span> Paul Coffey<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n

Paul Coffey Sets Defencemen Goal Record<\/h3>\n

1986: The Edmonton Oilers<\/a> blueliner breaks Bobby Orr<\/strong><\/a>‘s record for most goals by a defenceman in an 8-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks<\/a>. Coffey would score twice to tie and then surpass the Boston Bruins<\/a> great.<\/p>\n

He’d score a power-play goal three days later against the Calgary Flames to set the standard at 48 goals. That record has yet to be broken since.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1939: Mel Hill<\/a><\/strong> of the Bruins closes out the Stanley Cup semifinal series with the New York Rangers<\/a> with his third overtime goal in Game 7. Hill scores eight minutes into the third overtime to seal the win.<\/p>\n

1969: Ted Irvine<\/a><\/strong> of the Los Angeles Kings<\/a> sets a record for fastest OT playoff-goal in 19 seconds in a 5-4 victory over the Oakland Seals. Irvine is the father of professional wrestler, Chris Jericho.<\/p>\n

1972: Bobby Hull<\/a><\/strong> scores his 604th and final NHL goal as the Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> beat the Detroit Red Wings<\/a>, 6-1. Hull also scores his 50th goal for the fifth time in his career.<\/p>\n

On the same day, Vic Hadfield<\/a><\/strong> is the first Rangers player to get 50 goals in a 6-5 loss to the Montreal Canadiens.<\/a><\/p>\n

1977:<\/strong> The Canadiens break the record for most wins in a season with 59 in an 11-0 drubbing of the Washington Capitals<\/a>. Montreal would win two nights later in Washington to go 60-8-12 for 132 points, which is still an NHL record.<\/p>\n

1980: Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong> is the first teenager to score 50 goals in a season in a 1-1 tie with the Minnesota North Stars.<\/a><\/p>\n

Five years later, Gretzky breaks the record for most hat tricks with 34. The Oilers would skate to a 6-4 win over the\u00a0 Kings.<\/p>\n

1989: Mario Lemieux<\/a><\/strong> of the Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> scores twice to get his 300th career goal in a 6-5 overtime win against the Philadelphia Flyers.<\/a><\/p>\n

2016: Lindy Ruff<\/a><\/strong> wins his 700th game behind the bench as the Stars top the Kings, 3-2.<\/p>\n
