All eight were part of the 52 members, who travelled to California for Ottawa’s West coast swing in early March. The other 44 showed no signs of symptoms.

The Senator’s 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center, was the last game before the season’s postponement. The trigger, which called for the suspension of sports across North America, was Rudy Gobert, the first professional athlete in the NBA, testing positive for the virus.

Since the season has been on hiatus, only the Ottawa Senators and the Colorado Avalanche, have been vocal in their public updates on player testing. Both the Senators and Avalanche have two positive player tests each. They were also among the last teams to travel to California during the burgeoning spread of the virus.

More specifically, both played the San Jose Sharks at the SAP center in March. The Sharks later had one of their part-time employees confirmed as testing positive for the virus.

San Jose played home games on 5th (Minnesota Wild), 7th (Senators) and 8th (Avalanche) of March. This was despite instruction on the day of the Wild game, from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department, which recommended a moratorium on public gatherings of over 1,000 people.

No Current Sufferers

The Senators organisation confirmed that all six members have been kept in self-isolation and have since recovered from the virus. The Avalanche, on the other hand, have stated nobody else on their roster is exhibiting symptoms.

According to Igor Eronko, a Russian journalist and reporter for the KHL, the first player to test positive in the Sens camp was former Maple Leaf, Nikita Zaitsev. The Senators have not confirmed this assertion.
