We\u2019ll <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for April 1st, featuring the cancellation of the 1919 Stanley Cup Final.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>1919 Stanley Cup Final Canceled by Flu<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1919:<\/strong> The deciding game of the 1919 Stanley Cup Final was not played because of the influenza pandemic. It was supposed be Game 6 of the series between the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> and the Seattle Metropolitans. Only three Habs players were well enough to play.<\/p>\n<p>Defenceman <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/halljo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Hall<\/a><\/strong> would pass away from the illness four days later. George Kennedy would never fully recover and die on Oct. 19, 1921. The Stanley Cup would be awarded every year after that until the 2004 lockout.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1926: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/benedcl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clint Benedict<\/a><\/strong> of the Montreal Maroons is the first goalie to get three straight playoff shutouts in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Maroons would beat the Victoria Cougars in five games in the last final that didn&#8217;t have two NHL teams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1954: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a><\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> scores nine seconds into Game 5 of the Stanley Cup semifinal. It would be the fastest post-season goal in history as the Wings beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> in overtime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/leachre01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reggie Leach<\/a><\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> is the second player to score 60 goals in a season. He&#8217;d score twice in an 11-2 rout of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1978: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bossymi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Bossy<\/a><\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> is the first rookie to score 50 goals in a season. He scored twice in a 3-2 victory over the Capitals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1993: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/burepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pavel Bure<\/a><\/strong> is the first player in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a> history to get 100 points. He&#8217;d get a goal an assist in a 5-3 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2004:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> are the first team to play 30 overtime games in a single season. Boston would skate to a 3-3 tie with Washington.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidney Crosby<\/a><\/strong> would net his 300th goal as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> would lose 4-1 to Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a><\/strong> is the first Caps&#8217; player to play in 1,000 career games.
