We\u2019ll <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for March 31st, featuring<\/span> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Gordie Howe Born in Saskatchewan<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1928:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Detroit Red Wings<\/a> great was born in Floral, Saskatchewan. The man known as &#8220;Mr. Hockey&#8221; would score 801 NHL goals and added 174 from the World Hockey Association. He would win the Hart Trophy and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rossar01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art Ross<\/a> Trophy six times each and win four Stanley Cups.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;d retire in 1971 and be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972. Howe would return to hockey to play with his sons <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howema02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Howe<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marty Howe<\/a><\/strong> of the Houston Aeros. He&#8217;d return to the NHL with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hartford Whalers<\/a> for one last season in 1979-80. He would pass away at the age of 88 on June 10, 2016.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1923: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/clancki01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">King Clancy<\/a><\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> plays all six positions in a 1-0 victory over Edmonton in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1927: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/morenho01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Howie Morenz<\/a><\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> scores 12:05 into overtime in a 1-0 win over the Montreal Maroons. It&#8217;s the first all-NHL playoff game in the Stanley Cup playoffs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1942:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> are the first franchise to win 50 post-season games with a 3-2 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> in Game 6 of the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1951:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> and the Leafs play to the last time in post-season history. Both clubs are tied at one, but Ontario&#8217;s Sundary curfew law prevented the game from continuing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1973: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/orrbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Orr<\/a><\/strong> gets a hat trick to reach 100 points for the fourth straight season. Boston would lose 7-3 to Toronto.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bossymi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Bossy<\/a><\/strong> is the first player to score 50 goals in seven straight seasons. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> would beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> 3-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1989: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/priakse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Priakin<\/a><\/strong> is the first player from the Soviet Hockey Federation as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames <\/a>beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a>, 4-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roenije01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Roenick<\/a><\/strong> is the first <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> player to get 100 points in three consecutive seasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/messima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Messier<\/a><\/strong> scores in his final NHL game as the Rangers lose 4-3 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/knights\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> are the first modern expansion team to win a division title as they beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Jose Sharks<\/a>, 3-2.
