We\u2019ll <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for March 30th, featuring the NHL\/WHA merger.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>NHL\/WHA Merger Finalized<\/h3>\n<p>1979: The NHL announces that it will add four teams from the World Hockey Association to expand to 21 teams. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quebec Nordiques,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hartford Whalers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> are the four clubs to make the jump.<\/p>\n<p>Edmonton would the most successful of the quartet as they won the Stanley Cup five times from 1984-90. The three other clubs would eventually relocate to different cities.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1916:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> win the first of their 24 Stanley Cups with a 2-1 win over the Portland Rosebuds of the PCHA. Montreal was part of the National Hockey Association.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1918:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Toronto Arenas<\/a> would be the first NHL to win the Stanley Cup as they beat the Vancouver Millionaires, 2-1, in Game 5 of the final. Toronto&#8217;s team would eventually become the Maple Leafs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1944:<\/strong> Montreal sets the record for most goals in period during a playoff game with seven. The Habs rout the Leafs 11-0 to clinch a spot in the final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1957: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maurice Richard<\/a> <\/strong>is the first player to get 100 points in the post-season. Montreal beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> 8-3 in Game 3 of the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1969: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/staplpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Stapleton<\/a><\/strong> ties the record for assists by a defenceman with six. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings,<\/a> 9-5.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1974: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/parenbe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bernie Parent<\/a><\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> sets the record for most wins by a goalie in a season with 45.
