Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for March 24th, featuring the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> taking the longest game in NHL History.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Red Wings Win Longest Game in NHL History<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1936: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brunemu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mud Bruneteau<\/a><\/strong> scored 16:30 into the sixth overtime as the Red Wings blanked the Montreal Maroons, 1-0, in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. The game is still the longest in NHL history.<\/p>\n<p>Both teams played equal to three games in the opener of the championship series. The game did not end until 2:25 a.m. of the following morning. Bruneteau ended the game after beating <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chabolo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lorne Chabot<\/a> <\/strong>with a low shot.<\/p>\n<p>Shots on goal weren&#8217;t an official stat at the time, but Wings goalie <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithno01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Normie Smith<\/a> reportedly made 92 saves. Smith also lost 12 pounds of weight during the game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1953: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sawchte01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Sawchuk<\/a><\/strong> nets his third straight post-season shut out as the Wings blanked the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Boston Bruins<\/a>, 7-0, in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup semifinal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1978: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a><\/strong> sets an NHL record with his 29th hat trick. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a>, 11-4. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Hull<\/a><\/strong> previously held the record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1982: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vaiveri01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Vaive<\/a><\/strong> is the first 50-goal scorer in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> history in a 4-3 win over the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> St. Louis Blues.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1992: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a><\/strong> scores his 40th goal of the season to record his 1,000th career point as the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> lose to 4-3 to the Red Wings. He&#8217;s the second-fastest to achieve the feat in 513 games.
