During the NHL\u2019s hiatus, we at the Last Word on Hockey are going to look back at each date\u2019s historical <\/span>significance<\/span> to the game. We\u2019ll <\/span>remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for March 14.

Today in Hockey History: March <\/span>14<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Howe, Mullen Hit 500 Mark<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

1<\/strong>962:<\/strong> The great <\/span>Gordie Howe <\/strong><\/a>becomes only the second player in NHL history to record 500 career goals. Mr. Hockey reaches that mark in a 3-2 loss by the Detroit Red Wings<\/a> to the New<\/a><\/span> York Rangers. Only Montreal Canadiens<\/a> legend Maurice Richard<\/a><\/strong> had eclipsed 500 goals prior to How<\/span>e.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The legendary Detroit forward would finish with <\/span>801 career goals and add 174 more goals from his time with Houston <\/span>Aeros<\/span> and New England Whalers of the WHA<\/span>. Howe ended up 975 professional goals in his storied career.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1997:<\/strong> Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> forward Joe Mullen<\/a> <\/strong>also reached the 500-goal mark on this date. He became the first American to make the mileston<\/span>e in the Pens\u2019 6-3 loss to the Colorado Avalanche.<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mullen would retire <\/span>at the end of the season with 502 goals and 561 assists to get 1,063 points in 1,062 career games. <\/span>He is still the seventh highest-scoring U.S.-born player as Brett Hull<\/a><\/strong> leads the way with 1,391 points.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

1965: <\/strong>Habs<\/span> legend Jean Beliveau<\/a> <\/strong>notched his 350<\/span>th<\/span> career goal in a 6-4 win over the Rangers. He <\/span>became the third player in franchise history to record at least 350 goals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1971:<\/strong> Future Hall of Famer Ken Dryden<\/a> <\/strong>makes his NHL debut for Montreal in a 5-1 victory over Pitts<\/span>burgh. Dryden made 35 saves in the win and would get the Conn Smythe Trophy before he would win the Calder Trophy for best rookie.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1980: Guy Lafleur<\/a><\/strong> is the fourth <\/span>Habs<\/span> player to score 400 goals with the club in a 4-3 win ov<\/span>er the Winnipeg Jets.<\/a> The Flower became the youngest player to that milestone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1986:<\/strong> Edmonton Oilers <\/a><\/span>defenceman<\/span> Paul Coffey<\/a> <\/strong>tied Tom <\/span>Bladon\u2019s<\/span> record of eight points by a blue-liner in a single game. Coffey logged two goals and six assists for an eight<\/span>-point effort against the Red Wings. The game ended with a 12-3 victory for the Oilers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1991: <\/strong>Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong> of the Los Angeles Kings\u2019 <\/a><\/span>surpasses<\/span> Coffey\u2019s record with 18<\/span>th<\/span> game in a row with an assist. <\/span>Los Angeles would lose 6-3 to the Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2001: Ron Francis<\/a> <\/strong>becomes the first player in Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> (Hartford Whalers) history reach 1,000 career points for his career. <\/span>Carolina would lose 6-3 to Montreal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2016:<\/strong> Kings\u2019 goalie Jonathan Quick<\/a> <\/strong>sets the American record for shutouts with 41 in a 5-0 win over the Blackhawks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
