Granlund is in the last year <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of a contract that sees him get $5.75 million per season.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The 27-year-old came over last trade deadline from the Minnesota Wild and has struggled for the most part. Granlund carries that big cap hit and becomes an unrestricted free ag<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ent on July <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Predators also have to figure out what they&#8217;re going to do with other pending free agents on their roster. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithcr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Smith<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/grimaro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rocco Grimaldi<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong>Coli<\/strong><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>n Blackwell<\/strong> are forwards that become UFAs in the off-season. This would especially be the case if they continue to produce and push the Predat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ors into the Stanley Cup playoffs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Poile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has been pretty adept at getting players to take a little bit less to stay with the team. Talented <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">defencemen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ekholma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mattias Ekholm<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ellisry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Ellis<\/a> <\/strong>could have gotten more<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on the open market. However, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Poile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was able to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">get team-friendly deals with Ekholm getting $3.75 million and Ellis commanding $6.25 million.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The cap gymnastics will get difficult when<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/josiro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roman Josi<\/a> <\/strong>starts getting over $9 million per season, which is more than double his $4 million cap hit. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nashville is going to have do some creative accounting to keep their core together.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Case for Trading<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nashville does have a crop of young forwards itching for an opportunity. <\/span><strong>Eeli Tolvanen<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> have already matched their goal total from last season (15) with the Milwaukee Admirals. <\/span><strong>Yakov <\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>Treni<\/strong>n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> made a good showing of himself when <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he played, including standing up to Boston Bruins captain<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/charazd01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zdeno Chara<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>Phillip Tomasino<\/strong> is having <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a great season with the Oshawa Generals in the OHL as is <strong>Egor\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong>Afanasyev<\/strong> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">for the Windsor Spitfires. The young talent may be cost-effective and too great for <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Poile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to ignore. If Nashville does a tear down, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tolvanen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Trenin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> would likely get an extend<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed look to see if they can both make the roster.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The latter two would get a full opportunity to prove themselves at training camp as well as many other prospects.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Case for Keeping<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, the Predators are only three points off of the second wild card spot held by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rizona Coyotes. Nashville also has three games in hand on Arizona in the chase for that coveted playoff spot. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The wild card looks to be the team\u2019s best option as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> are eight points ahead of Nashville for the third and final automatic spot in the Central Division. A run of wins <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">could put the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Preds<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> right in the mix for post-season.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nashville might want to hang onto its big guns if it wants to make a charge at the playoffs. Players like Granlund, Smith and others have the experience of being in a playoff chase.
