In those, he has a mere 12 points. Still, his work on the defensive end of the puck has done enough to keep him among the Flames top-four. His average ice time of 21:12 per-game ranks third on the team, only behind Mark Giordano and Noah Hanifin. Hamonic received a boost in the team’s last two games, a result of Giordano’s recent lower-body injury. That was until he left early in Saturday’s game. He exited the ice early in the second period, returned for a few shifts later in the game, and then again left due to an undisclosed injury; likely the same one that resulted in his move to IR.

With Giordano week-to-week with an injury of his own, many are concerned with the Flames defence. The team currently has eight defensemen in the NHL, although recalling players from the minors isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Zac Leslie, whose 25 points 38 games currently leads the Flames minor-league defensemen in scoring, is among these options. With-or-without a recall, though, the Flames will need to find some way to cope with injuries to both Giordano and Hamonic. The team is currently in possession of the Western Conference’s second Wild Card by only a mere point, with four teams within at least three points of Calgary’s Wild Card.

It’s going to be a tough road ahead, as Calgary will now have to turn towards Hanifin and T.J. Brodie, among others, to support the team’s blue-line. Hanifin has 15 points in 56 games, while Brodie has 14 through 50. The duo will get a great chance to boost these numbers, though, as Calgary looks to stay strong until Hamonic and Giordano can return.

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images

The Calgary Flames announced on Monday that Travis Hamonic has been placed on injured reserve.
