The 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings<\/a> will no doubt try to be sellers at the deadline. However, will anyone buy what they\u2019re selling? Detroit has been abysmal this season and many of the team\u2019s veter<\/span>an players that general manager Steve Yzerman<\/a><\/strong> would like to trade off are struggling.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Red Wings beat writer Ted <\/span>Kulfan<\/span> brought up this point <\/span>in a recent article<\/span><\/a>. The team has been so bad, including a lot of their tradable assets. Players like Jimmy Howard<\/a><\/strong> have been mired in an awful sl<\/span>ump. <\/span>Defencemen<\/span> Mike Green<\/a><\/strong> and Trevor Daley<\/a><\/strong> <\/span>are on their way to career-lows in points.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Forwards such as <\/span>Andreas Athanasiou have been hurt and inconsistent. There could be some clamoring for Luke Glendening<\/a><\/strong> and Darren Helm<\/a><\/strong>, but their value could be driven down due t<\/span>o Detroit\u2019s failings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yzerman may also be planning on moving other names that people don\u2019t know about right now. The Wings have p<\/span>lenty of cap space ($13 million) and that could also play a factor in what they do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2019-20 Detroit Red Wings at the Deadline<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Players<\/span><\/h3>\n

Jimmy Howard<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

It\u2019s been a rough season for the Ogdensburg, NY native, who has lost his last 17 starts in a row. He <\/span>has a record of 2<\/span>-20-2 with a <\/span>4.12 goals-against<\/span>-average and .884 save percentage. <\/span>Those numbers aren\u2019t conducive to finding a trade partner.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are other goalie candidates like an <\/span>Alexandar Georgiev<\/a><\/strong>, Jake Allen<\/a><\/strong> and others that are performing much better. <\/span>Howard could be a rental if a team just wants a veteran netminder for the stretch drive. <\/span>He <\/span>may <\/span>do better with a change of scenery.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Howard hasn\u2019t been short on confidence, but he needs a win soon in order to demonstrate some trade value. Losing his $4 million cap hit at the end of the season will help, but Detroit would like to get something out of their longtime starter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mike Green<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The injury bug <\/span>has once again bit the veteran <\/span>defenceman<\/span> before a trade deadline. Health questions may have prevented the Calgary, Alberta native from <\/span>being traded at last year\u2019s deadline.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Those injury problems have slowed the puck-moving blue-liner to two goals and eight points in 41 games this season. <\/span>Green is well on his way to having a career-low in points. He did have seven points in 2011-12 with the Washington Capitals<\/a>, but he was out most of the season.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 34-year-old could be a good third-pair <\/span>defenceman<\/span> and someone that can play on the second power-play unit. However, his recent injury troubles may turn off other teams from taking a<\/span> look at the former two-time Norris Trophy runner-up.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Trevor Daley<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Daley is another <\/span>defenceman<\/span> that\u2019s been hit with the injury bug. The Toronto native has struggled to generate offence in the last two seasons w<\/span>ith the Red Wings. He has five assists this season in 28 games and only has 11 goals in three seasons with the club.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 36-year-old <\/span>is trying to contribute in other categories like blocked shots and can be used as a bottom-pair defender if a team wants to take a risk <\/span>on him. <\/span>Daley has reportedly asked Yzerman <\/span>to trade him<\/span><\/a> and the Detroit general manager will try to accommodate him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andreas Athanasiou<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The young forward is likely Detroit\u2019s best trade chip the team has. Injuries have also hampered the Woodbridge, On<\/span>tario native\u2019s production as he has five goals and 19 points in 37 games.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u2019s shown promise in past seasons and would be a nice depth scorer for a contender. His value is lower than what it could\u2019ve been at the start of the season. However, <\/span>he is a former 30-goal scorer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They key is how healthy will he be before the deadline<\/span>. A good week or two of play will help market his value to any suitors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Veteran Forwards<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Glendening has been linked with the Toronto Maple <\/a><\/span>Leafs<\/span><\/a> in a past seasons and would be welcome as a defensive forward. He is <\/span>a free agent in 2021 and comes in at <\/span>a rate of $1.8 million.<\/span> However, he\u2019s been a great locker room leader and Detroit would only deal him for the right price.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Darren Helm<\/a><\/strong> also has another year <\/span>left on his deal and would be a go<\/span>od addition to a team. <\/span>Helm has six goals in 53 games so far this season. Valtteri Filppula<\/a><\/strong> could be another name that a <\/span>contender looks at for depth purposes. Filppula is a season removed from a 17-g<\/span>oal campaign with the New York Islanders<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Salary Dumping Ground<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Red Wings could also do teams a <\/span>favour<\/span> and became a salary dumping ground for teams looking to offload payroll. Detroit has <\/span>nearly $9.5 million in deadline cap space and could take on a contract. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kyle Turris<\/a> <\/strong>of the Nashville Predators<\/a> comes to mind. <\/span>However, he\u2019s shown a revival under new coach John Hynes<\/strong> and the Predators may think twice about dealing him or Mikael Granlund<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What it Means<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings want to be active at the trade deadline. However, will they get any takers for some of their players? Yzerman may not get the value he wants out of some his players.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Veterans like Green, Daley, Athanasiou and others may still get the picks that the Wings\u2019 general manager craves, but he may not get what he could have go<\/span>tten at the beginning of the season.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
