The charges stem from an incident on Jan. 28, 2020 at the Kentucky Grand Hotel and Spa in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Ed Belfour Arrested: Charged with Criminal Mischief and Public Intoxication

According to news reports, Belfour was allegedly involved in an altercation with a hotel employee and damaged hotel property while under the influence of alcohol. The arrest report indicates that when police arrived, Belfour had bloodshot eyes and was agitated, slurring his speech. Police found him holding a curtain rod that had been ripped from the drywall. When police attempted to detain him, he was initially resistant.

This has been a familiar theme for Ed Belfour. In 2000, Belfour was arrested at a hotel in Dallas on charges of assault and resisting arrest. He eventually pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour charge of resisting police transfer. In 2007, in South Beach, Belfour was arrested again and charged with disorderly intoxication, as well as resisting a police officer without violence.

Throughout much of his NHL career, Belfour was an elite NHL goaltender. He won the Vezina Trophy in 1991 and 1993 while with the Chicago Blackhawks. Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 1999 and made several notable playoff appearances. During the 2003 playoff run with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Belfour made 72 saves, taking the Philadelphia Flyers to triple overtime in an admirable, if losing effort.

He became a member of the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011. He was famous for his fiery competitiveness. In one of his signature moves, when opposing forwards ventured too far into his crease, he took his goalie stick and cracked them over the back of the knees. He usually got away with it.

During his career, Belfour’s feisty spirit brought him considerable success on the ice. It continues to get him in trouble off it.

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Early on Tuesday morning, former NHL goaltender Ed Belfour was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal mischief and public intoxication.
