{"id":627,"date":"2016-09-06T15:28:40","date_gmt":"2016-09-06T19:28:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/?p=627"},"modified":"2016-09-08T12:04:30","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T16:04:30","slug":"kekalainen-davidson-zito-sign-two-year-extensions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2016\/09\/06\/kekalainen-davidson-zito-sign-two-year-extensions\/","title":{"rendered":"Jarmo Kekalainen, John Davidson, Bill Zito Sign Extensions with Columbus Blue Jackets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The three most powerful men at the front office of the\u00a0<strong>Columbus Blue Jackets<\/strong> were extended for two more years, ensuring they would be back once their current contract is up.<\/p>\n<h2>Kekalainen, Davidson, Zito Sign Two-Year Extensions<\/h2>\n<p>General Manager\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kekalja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarmo Kekalainen<\/a><\/strong>, assistant general manager\u00a0<strong>Bill Zito\u00a0<\/strong>and president of hockey operations\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/davidjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Davidson<\/a><\/strong> were all in the final years of the current contract, but the extension ties them to the team through the 2018-19 season.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Contracts of Davidson, Kekalainen and Zito were to run through this season. The year prior, they missed out by a single point.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, injuries decimated the team&#8217;s momentum altogether, ending Columbus up in 8th in the <strong>Metropolitan Division <\/strong>and 27th overall. This would make the second year in a row the team would fail to reach the post-season.<\/p>\n<h4>Trending Upwards?<\/h4>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/bluejacketsxtra.dispatch.com\/content\/blogs\/puck-rakers\/2016\/09\/davidson-kekalainen-zito-sign-two-year-extensions.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a statement posted by The Columbus Dispatch<\/a>, Davidson said,\u00a0<strong>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to set up a base here that\u2019s going to be a base for a long time, so that it\u2019s a good team for a long time. The draft and development side is in very good shape.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Taking a look at the base of the Columbus Blue Jackets, it&#8217;s not hard to justify that belief. In just a couple of years, management has drafted well and traded great to solidify depth and skill level at each position and role. From big name forwards such as\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bjorkol01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oliver Bjorkstrand<\/a><\/strong>, who stepped into the league as a 20-year-old prospect and scored four goals and eight points in 12 games, to newly drafted <strong>Pierre-Luc Dubois<\/strong>, 20-year-old <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/milanso01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sonny Milano<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and center <strong>Nick Moutrey<\/strong>. They&#8217;ve got defense in spades with names like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/harrisc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Harrington<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Dillon Heatherington<\/strong>, <strong>Zachary Werenski<\/strong> and <strong>Gabriel Carlsson<\/strong>, and goaltenders <strong>Oscar Dansk<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/korpijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joonas Korpisalo<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/forsban01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anton Forsberg<\/a><\/strong>.
