The 22-year-old has turned heads in his first season as a full-time NHL player. The 5\u201911&#8243;, 197-pound defenceman has three goals and four assists in 24 games. He has been a huge part of the Oilers\u2019 early success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethan Bear a Solid Addition<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethan Bear is a native of Regina, Saskatchewan and a former fifth-round pick of the Oilers back in 2015. He was somewhat of a surprise making the team out of training camp. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/larssad01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Larsson<\/a><\/strong> went down with an injury in the first game of the season, and Bear was moved up in the lineup and took the opportunity and ran with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far this season Bear has been one of the Oilers\u2019 most reliable defencemen. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/teams\/EDM\/2020.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stats don\u2019t lie<\/a>, Bear currently has the best Corsi For Percentage (52.1) and Relative Corsi For (7.0) amongst all defencemen on the Oilers. To put things into perspective, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcdavco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor McDavid<\/a> <\/strong>has been dominant so far and his Corsi numbers are 49.7 and 3.0 respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impressively, Bear has been averaging over 21 minutes a night and playing an important role on the Oilers&#8217; top-four defence. Often being paired with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nurseda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darnell Nurse<\/a><\/strong>, Bear has been used to not only shut-down the other team\u2019s best players but has contributed offensively as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bear\u2019s Overall Play Surprising and Impressive<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bear\u2019s solid two-way play has given the Oilers\u2019 defence a dimension they have been lacking for a long time. He is a right-handed shot with strong puck-moving skills and is poised with the puck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bear has the ability to safely transport the puck up the ice. His superb passing to start the breakout has helped the Oilers\u2019 tremendously.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iR4HLGXegOw\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 5\u201911&#8243; Bear is not the biggest nor most physical player on the roster. His strong positional play and good stick-checking abilities have made him hard to beat in his own zone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bear&#8217;s strong overall play has warranted some to believe he should be part of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/oilers-ethan-bear-early-favourite-calder-trophy-strong-start\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> early discussions for the NHL rookie of the year.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Bear Just Getting Started<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, it looks like Bear is just getting started. The former WHL Defenceman of the Year might be able to bring more offensively very soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Oilers currently find themselves at the top of the Pacific Division with a 14-7-3 record. Bear has been a major contributor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capfriendly.com\/players\/ethan-bear\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">playing on a bargain contract<\/a> ($720,000 cap-hit) but is due for a new deal next season. If he keeps things up, the Oilers will probably have no choice but to give him a nice raise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Oilers and Ethan Bear Going Forward<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going forward this makes things very interesting. The Oilers have a plethora of high-end defensive prospects including <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bouchev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evan Bouchard<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caleb Jones<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brobeph01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philip Broberg<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/samordm01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dmitri Samorukov<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lageswi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Lagesson.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, the Oilers currently roster includes<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/klefbos01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oscar Klefbom<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nurseda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darnell Nurse<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/larssad01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Larsson<\/a><\/strong> who are all 27 or younger.\u00a0 So,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hollake01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Holland<\/a><\/strong> might have a few tough decisions to make on the blueline in the next few years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But with Bear showing so much potential to become a reliable top-four defenceman for years to come,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0he might be considered an untouchable piece for the Oilers in the next few years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Main Photo:<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"ukWT--oWTAtSTe-gX80c2Q\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/1177982133\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'ukWT--oWTAtSTe-gX80c2Q',sig:'ihFmqepyRg6teuOoh56gypFhmK2Tv1NMQHb4AYi3wB4=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'1177982133',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ethan Bear&#8216;s solid play has been a major surprise for the Edmonton Oilers this season.
