He speculated that Antti Raanta of the Arizona Coyotes would be a good candidate to come over to Newark.

Brooks pointed out that the Devils have great offensive potential, but goalie duo of Cory Schneider and Mackenzie Blackwood have been lacklustre so far this season. New Jersey is tied for the second-worst goals against with the New York Rangers with 3.78 goals allowed per game.

The Finnish goalie makes $4.25 million for this season and next season. However, he may keep both goalies to give the Coyotes their first playoff appearance since 2012.

Analysis: It’s no secret that the Devils have the offence to get back into the race if and when it gets on track. However, their woeful goaltending has been problematic. New Jersey is among the five worst teams in the league so far this season.

Raanta does have playoff experience and won a Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015. He is 2-0-1 with a 2.62 goals-against average this season. Acquiring Raanta would likely mean the end of Schneider’s time with the Devils. Blackwood seems to be the future in net for the club.

Getting another goalie may also convince Taylor Hall to stay with the Devils. His contract comes up at the end of the season and a move by Ray Shero may help Hall stay put. The former Hart Trophy has a big decision coming and he may not want to stay on a rebuilding club.

BOSTON, MA – MAY 2: Torey Krug #47 of the Boston Bruins skates against the Tampa Bay Lightning during the third period of Game Three of the Eastern Conference Second Round during the 2018 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at TD Garden on May 2, 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts.
