He will be re-evaluated after those two weeks.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MapleLeafs?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@MapleLeafs<\/a> announced today that centre John Tavares sustained a broken finger late in last night\u2019s game in Washington. <\/p>\n<p>He will be out of the lineup for a minimum of two weeks, at which point he will be reassessed by the team&#39;s medical staff.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Leafs PR (@LeafsPR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeafsPR\/status\/1184895004105478147?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 17, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>John Tavares Injured<\/h2>\n<p>Tavares sustained the injury late into Wednesday&#8217;s game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> after taking a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/riellmo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morgan Rielly<\/a><\/strong> point shot to the hand.<\/p>\n<p>So far this season, Tavares has scored three goals and four assists for seven points to go along with two minutes in penalties in eight games. His possession numbers were 57.3 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 0.2.<\/p>\n<p>Over his 11-year NHL career, John Tavares has played for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He has 322 goals and 394 assists for 716 career points in 759 career games. He was originally drafted by the Islanders in the 1st round, 1st overall in the 2009 NHL draft.<\/p>\n<h2>What This Means for the Future<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/10\/02\/john-tavares-toronto-maple-leafs-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tavares was recently appointed to be captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>, and has only played in eight games since then. While his line has struggled at 5v5 this season, things were looking up when <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mooretr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Moore<\/a><\/strong> replaced\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kapanka01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kasperi Kapanen<\/a> <\/strong>at left-wing. The Leafs will have to find someone to take the role of Tavares between <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marnemi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitch Marner<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mooretr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Moore<\/a>. The most logical idea would be having\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kerfoal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander Kerfoot<\/a><\/strong> playing on the Marner line. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/spezzja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Spezza<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gauthfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frederik Gauthier<\/a><\/strong> could play 3rd and 4th line center, instead of splitting time at the 4th line role.<\/p>\n<p>Tavares also holds a spot on the top powerplay unit, where he will have to be replaced.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nylanwi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Nylander<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has been effective offensively for the team this season, and with Tavares out, this could be his opportunity to play on the top unit.
