As we go through the Summer of 2019 LWOH will be featuring a team-by-team look at the top prospects in the NHL. We will be following the order of the first round of the NHL draft (as if there were no traded draft picks) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019-top-shelf-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you can find all the articles here<\/a>.\u00a0 Since we had an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019-nhl-entry-draft-headquarters\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">extensive NHL Draft preview<\/a>, we will not be reviewing the players who were drafted in the 2019 draft, as there have been no games since then, and our reports on them will not have changed. Today, we look at the 2019 Organizational Prospect Rankings.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13542 td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/07\/Top-Shelf-Prospects.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"107\"><em>What we will be doing is linking you to those articles, as well as taking a look at prospects that were acquired before this year\u2019s draft; their progress, and their chances of making the 2019-20 roster of the NHL team in question. We will also bring you one sleeper pick \u2013 a player who was either drafted in the 4th-round or later, or was an undrafted free agent signing who we pick as our dark horse to make the NHL. For those wondering, the cut-off for what is or isn\u2019t a prospect is typically about 50 NHL games played (including playoff games) or is 25 years old. These are not hard or fast rules though, and we may make some exceptions depending on the circumstances.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>2019 Organizational Prospect Rankings (31-21)<\/h2>\n<p>After going through the top 10 prospects of every team in the NHL and giving full scouting reports, we will now be ranking each team\u2019s prospect pools.<\/p>\n<p>Note: If you click on the team name, you will get a link to a full prospect report on that team. \u00a0The snippets here are just a taste of the information available.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>31.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/09\/12\/san-jose-sharks-prospects-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Jose Sharks<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Top prospect <strong>Ryan Merkley<\/strong> has a ton of offensive talent but also has major question marks surrounding his defensive game, coachability, and attitude. Looking at the system, he is the only player who looks like he could play on a top-line or top defence pair. Players such as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gambrdy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dylan Gambrell<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Sasha Chmelevski<\/strong>, and <strong>Ivan Chekhovich\u00a0<\/strong>appear to top out as middle-six options if they reach their ceiling.<\/p>\n<h3>30.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/09\/07\/washington-capitals-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Capitals<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In <strong>Ilya Samsonov<\/strong>, the Capitals have one of the top goalie prospects in the World. The system also has a talented defender in <strong>Alex Alexeyev<\/strong>, while 2019 first-round pick <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockeyprospects.com\/2019\/04\/23\/connor-mcmichael-scouting-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Connor McMichael<\/strong><\/a> looks good upfront. Overall though, the system needs a real infusion of elite quality and depth.<\/p>\n<h3>29.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/09\/14\/tsp-boston-bruins-prospects-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston Bruins<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Jack Studnicka<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vaakaur01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Urho Vaakanainen<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Jakub Lauko<\/strong> lead the way for the Bruins in terms of key prospects. Some strange picks over the years, including <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/senysza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zachary Senyshyn<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/z\/zborija01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jakub Zboril<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fredetr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trent Frederic<\/a><\/strong> have left many scratching their heads. The Bruins hope that their most recent off-the-board first-round pick in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/05\/20\/john-beecher-scouting-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>John Beecher<\/strong><\/a> develops better than those previous selections.<\/p>\n<h3>28.) <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/08\/24\/columbus-blue-jackets-prospects-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>After trading away a number of prospects and picks at the 2019 NHL Trade Deadline, the Blue Jackets system now shows the results of those trades. They have talented forwards in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/texieal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexandre Texier<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Emil Bemstrom<\/strong>, and <strong>Liam Foudy<\/strong>; along with a talented defender in <strong>Vladislav Gavrikov<\/strong>. However, the overall depth of the system has been decimated.<\/p>\n<h3>27.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/08\/25\/winnipeg-jets-prospects-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winnipeg Jets<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vesalkr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kristian Vesalainen<\/a><\/strong> has legitimate top-line potential. He is an offensive dynamo. The Jets hope that <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nikusa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sami Niku<\/a><\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/04\/17\/ville-heinola-scouting-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ville Heinola<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Dylan Samberg<\/strong>, and <strong>Logan Stanley<\/strong> can join <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/morrijo04.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Morrissey<\/a><\/strong> to form the nucleus of a rebuilt defence core over the next several seasons. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/applema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mason Appleton<\/a><\/strong> could fit in the middle six.<\/p>\n<h3>26.) <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/09\/08\/calgary-flames-prospects-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Calgary Flames<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>An unfortunate off-season injury to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/valimju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Juuso Valimaki<\/a><\/strong> will prevent the Flames top prospect from earning a spot on the blue line out of training camp this year. It also opens the door for number two prospect <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kylinol01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oliver Kylington<\/a><\/strong> to get a full-time role on the blueline. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dubedi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dillon Dube<\/a><\/strong> also has a chance to win a role on the forward group.<\/p>\n<h3>25.) <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/08\/28\/pittsburgh-penguins-prospects-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The Penguins moved up the rankings by acquiring <strong>Pierre-Oliver Joseph <\/strong>and drafting <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/05\/01\/samuel-poulin-scouting-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Samuel Poulin<\/strong><\/a> this year. Solid seasons from <strong>Calen Addison<\/strong>, <strong>Filip Hallander<\/strong>, <strong>Justin Almeida<\/strong> and <strong>Jordy Bellerive<\/strong> also proved that Penguins&#8217; depth is improving. There is still some improvements that can be made.<\/p>\n<h3>24.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/08\/04\/minnesota-wild-prospects-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota Wild<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Winger <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/04\/09\/matthew-boldy-scouting-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Matthew Boldy<\/strong><\/a> was a top winger on one of the best US NTDP teams in history. Meanwhile, <strong>Kirill Kaprizov<\/strong> is one of the top forwards in the KHL but bringing him to North America has been an issue. Centre <strong>Alexander Khovanov<\/strong> missed time in his draft year and fell to the third round of the 2018 Draft. He could be a steal for the Wild. Beyond that, the depth in the system needs to be improved.<\/p>\n<h3>23.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/09\/05\/nashville-predators-prospects-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nashville Predators<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fabbrda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dante Fabbro<\/a><\/strong> looks ready to jump right in and take a top-four role with the Predators. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tolvaee01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eeli Tolvanen<\/a><\/strong> is close to NHL ready and has the potential to be a top-line winger. First-round pick <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/04\/29\/philip-tomasino-scouting-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Philip Tomasino<\/strong><\/a> is a dynamic skater who had a solid rise up draft rankings last season. From here the Predators have some solid depth pieces on the blue line.<\/p>\n<h3>22.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/08\/23\/dallas-stars-prospects-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas Stars<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Winger <strong>Jason Robertson<\/strong> led the entire CHL in points last season. 2018 first-round pick <strong>Ty Dellandrea<\/strong> had a solid season on a poor Flint Firebirds team. They will add scoring to the Stars in the near future, though perhaps not this season. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/guriade01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denis Gurianov<\/a><\/strong> took a step forward this past season. <strong>Jake Oettinger<\/strong> is the goalie of the future.<\/p>\n<h3>21.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/08\/31\/toronto-maple-leafs-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Leafs have a talented group of forwards at the NHL level. They now hope that defencemen <strong>Rasmus Sandin<\/strong> and <strong>Timothy Liljegren<\/strong> will provide the same type of talented youth on the blue line. <strong>Jeremy Bracco\u00a0<\/strong>was one of the more dynamic forwards in the AHL last season, especially on the power play. Beyond that, the Leafs depth has taken a hit with a number of graduates in recent seasons.
