{"id":55723,"date":"2019-09-07T14:19:09","date_gmt":"2019-09-07T18:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/?p=55723"},"modified":"2019-09-07T14:19:09","modified_gmt":"2019-09-07T18:19:09","slug":"updates-on-brock-boeser-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2019\/09\/07\/updates-on-brock-boeser-and-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Updates on Brock Boeser, Olli Juolevi, and More Vancouver Canucks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\">The Vancouver Canucks updates have been happening on a daily basis this month. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\">Between the signing of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/goldoni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nikolay Goldobin<\/strong><\/a>, continuing negotiations with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/boesebr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Brock Boeser<\/strong><\/a>, and <strong>Olli Juolevi<\/strong>&#8216;s health concerns, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/horvabo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bo Horvat<\/a><\/strong> declaring himself ready to be captain, it&#8217;s been a lively September for the team.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\">And that&#8217;s not even mentioning the new signings and where they might fit in once training camp starts.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Updates on Brock Boeser and More<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\">Olli Juolevi<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\">It was a relief to finally see Juolevi play professional hockey in North America last season. Until that is, a knee injury stopped him 18 games and 13 points in. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2018\/06\/11\/vancouver-canucks-olli-juolevi-back-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Originally announced<\/a> as \u201ca little bit of a knock\u201d it turned into a few weeks recovery, then surgery, finishing his year. The schedule was for a six month recovery period after December&#8217;s operation, making him available for training camp this year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\">Then the Canucks announced on Tuesday that he would not be attending camp, needing more recovery time. GM <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/benniji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Benning<\/a> would later clarify that Juolevi would be attending camp, but watched closely. If there is any sign of the injury flaring up, he will be taken off the ice to rest.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Juolevi&#8217;s injury history has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/canucks-preaching-cautious-approach-olli-juolevi\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">very frustrating for the 21-year old prospect<\/a>. \u201cI was hoping to make an impact for Vancouver after Christmas. It was tough mentally, absolutely.\u201d That might be optimistic this year, though not due to injury. The team has brought in NHL players for increased depth on the blue line, making Juolevi&#8217;s entry less likely.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Utica Comets coach Trent Cull is no doubt also hoping for a full season with Juolevi. Last year, he dressed 19 different defencemen, led by 70 games from 36-year old <strong>Jamie Sifers<\/strong>. Much of that would have been the responsibility of the Canucks themselves, going through 14 blueliners themselves. Many of Juolevi&#8217;s draftmates are well into their careers, increasing pressure on the team to get results from the 2016 fifth overall pick.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\">Bo Horvat<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\">In interviews at the NHL\/NHLPA meetings in Chicago, the 24-year old Horvat has said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/horvat-hopeful-for-chance-to-wear-the-c-in-vancouver-1.1361183\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he&#8217;s ready to assume captaincy<\/a> \u2013 if the team chooses him. Horvat has been widely regarded as the heir apparent for the past three years.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The Canucks went without a captain last season after <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sedinhe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henrik Sedin<\/a><\/strong> retired in 2018. It&#8217;s been a difficult few years for the team, but Horvat remembers the example set for him.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt definitely wasn&#8217;t easy[&#8230;] taking the heat every single day,\u201d he recalled. \u201cI kind of had that responsibility last year, so I got a little bit of practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Nikolay Goldobin<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Goldobin&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: medium;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/canucks-re-sign-forward-nikolay-goldobin-one-year-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signing W<\/a><a style=\"font-size: medium;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/canucks-re-sign-forward-nikolay-goldobin-one-year-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ednesday<\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> came as a bit of a surprise, as all the RFA talk has surrounded Brock Boeser. The team and he agreed to a one-way, one-year \u201cShow Me\u201d deal worth $900,000, keeping him out of the AHL. He started well last year on a line with <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/petteel01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elias Pettersson<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, but as Pettersson&#8217;s numbers declined so did Goldobin&#8217;s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">He and coach <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/greentr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Travis Green<\/a> have often been in conflict, with Goldobin a healthy scratch for several games last year. Green wants him to work on producing a consistent effort game-to-game and improve his defensive awareness.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Still, the talented winger had a career-high twenty-seven points and will be returning to a more talented team. Whether that adds to his opportunities or keeps them from him remains to be seen.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Brock Boeser<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If it has taken longer than hoped to sign Boeser, there is plenty of reason for it. Boeser&#8217;s father has been recovering from a stroke suffered just over a month ago. Duke Boeser has shown good signs of recovery since but has also had a recurrence of lung cancer this Summer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Needless to say, GM Jim Benning has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/vancouver-canucks-brock-boeser-contract\/c-308889542\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">willing to wait<\/a> for his star during negotiations with agent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hankibe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Hankinson<\/a>. They have discussed different structures for Boeser&#8217;s second contract and he is optimistic they&#8217;ll be done before camp opens.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It would be easy to assume Boeser will get whatever he wants from the goal-starved team. Skilled as he is, though, he has yet to reach 60 points or play 70 games in a year. This is a consideration for a long-term or top-dollar deal from the team&#8217;s perspective.
