{"id":54303,"date":"2019-08-17T11:30:44","date_gmt":"2019-08-17T15:30:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/?p=54303"},"modified":"2019-08-17T10:53:10","modified_gmt":"2019-08-17T14:53:10","slug":"edmonton-oilers-free-agents-they-can-still-go-after","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2019\/08\/17\/edmonton-oilers-free-agents-they-can-still-go-after\/","title":{"rendered":"Edmonton Oilers: Free Agents They Can Still Go After"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the new NHL season quickly approaching, there are still a few free agents the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> can go after.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oilers general manager <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hollake01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Holland<\/a><\/strong> has made <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/07\/19\/milan-lucic-traded\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">several moves<\/a> this summer, but it seems like the roster might be a few pieces away from being a playoff team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Free Agents Still Available<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the season approaches, it likely means less bargaining power for the free-agents still on the market. Perhaps Holland can use the opportunity to bring in a serviceable roster player at a discount.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main priorities for the Oilers this summer is to upgrade their secondary scoring. Edmonton <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhl.com\/stats\/team?reportType=season&amp;seasonFrom=20182019&amp;seasonTo=20182019&amp;gameType=2&amp;filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&amp;sort=goalsFor\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was ranked 20th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in \u201cgoals-for\u201d last season, with only 229.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcdavco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor McDavid<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/draisle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leon Draisaitl<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accounted for 40% of the team\u2019s total goals scored last season and they still missed the playoffs. Simply put, the Oilers need more secondary scoring if they want a shot at becoming a playoff team in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that said, here is a look at a few players the Oilers could potentially go after before the season starts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Derick Brassard as a Potential Fit<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gNQjSLp-3X0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of all the free agents out there, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brassde01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Derick Brassard<\/strong><\/a> might be one of the best fits for the Oilers to go after. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite struggling the past two seasons, Brassard has had several 18+ goal seasons in his career. He has even hit the 60 point plateau in the past.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding Brassard would give the Oilers extra depth at center, and give them the option to leave Draisatil on McDavids\u2019 wing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brassard would ideally slide into the third-line center role. He would give the Oilers some skill and some offense in the bottom-six. Something Edmonton was sorely missing last season.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to that, Brassard could occasionally move up into the top-six and see some time on the wing, and contribute on the powerplay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No question, there are concerns as to whether the 31-year-old can re-discover his game again. Nonetheless, Edmonton might be willing to buy-low on him and see if things work out. Much like what they did with<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chiasal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Chiasson<\/a> <\/strong>the last off-season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Price Point<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest obstacles is the price point. It was<a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2848464-nhl-rumors-latest-buzz-on-mitch-marner-derick-brassard-and-brendan-perlini\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> rumored that Brassard\u2019s camp<\/a> \u201c<em>has been asking for far in excess ($4 million) of what the Oilers are willing to pay<\/em>.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At $4 million-plus, the Oilers are probably out on Brassard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we can\u2019t forget that we are weeks away from September. So the contract the Brassard originally wanted is probably not out there for him at this point. If teams around the NHL really wanted to they would have offered him a contract already.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This gives the Oilers more bargaining power to bring the centerman in at a discount perhaps around the $2 Million range or even a professional try-out (PTO) if Brassard remains unsigned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Brassard\u2019s perspective, it depends on how much longer he is willing to wait and what team he feels can give him the best opportunity to succeed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Edmonton a Good Landing Spot for Brassard?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All-in-all, Edmonton may not be a bad landing spot for Brassard to play for one season and bounce back.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He doesn\u2019t have to be counted upon to score every night and has a chance to significantly increase his production if he gets to play with McDavid, Draisaitl or <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nugenry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Nugent-Hopkins<\/a><\/strong> occasionally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, bringing in Brassard could be a low-risk, medium-reward scenario for the Oilers.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If he is able to be a 35-45 point player, it would be a huge upgrade for the Oilers offense. Since no player in the bottom-six scored more than 30 points last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Should the Oilers Bring Back Patrick Maroon?<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LMQ_K2W4AvE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent Stanley Cup Champion <strong>Pat Maroon<\/strong> spent parts of three seasons in Edmonton and arguably played some of his best hockey in an Oiler uniform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He scored a career-high 27 goals in 2016-17 and spent a significant amount of time on Connor McDavid\u2019s wing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite helping the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> capture their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, it doesn&#8217;t look like they have enough money to bring Maroon back. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maroon is coming off, a one-year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capfriendly.com\/players\/patrick-maroon\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> $1,750,000 million deal.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Production-wise, he did not have the best year last season. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cBig Rig\u201d only registered 10 goals and 28 points in 74 games. So his demanded salary shouldn\u2019t be particularly high.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are in mid-August and Maroon is still without a contract. So at this point, it might not cost the Oilers a lot to bring him in for a second stint.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Can Maroon Bring?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After losing <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lucicmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Milan Lucic<\/a><\/strong> this summer, adding Maroon should restore some grit back into the Oilers\u2019 lineup. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, if Maroon is able to chip in around 10-15 goals, he would be considered an offensive upgrade from Lucic (6 goals, 20 points last year). Comparing cap hit, he<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0won\u2019t cost the Oilers\u00a0 $6,000,000 either, so that\u2019s another win!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, Maroon has been a better fit on McDavid\u2019s wing than most players. He also has the versatility to move down the lineup, and be used in a checking role as well.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bringing Maroon back would also give the Oilers a bit of a net presence and should improve their power play numbers. Maroon is known to have some slick hands and can finish around the net as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Can Both Sides Find Common Ground?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is uncertain whether Maroon is on Holland\u2019s radar at this point.
