Last season was a career year for Erne. He played in a personal best 65 games for the Lightning as he recorded a career-best seven goals and 13 assists en route to his first 20-point season. In three seasons with the Lightning, he has totalled 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists) in 114 games. In addition, Erne suited up for three playoff games for the Lightning last season.

Over the course of his career, Erne has spent parts of four seasons (2013-18) in the American Hockey League with the Syracuse Crunch. In 150 games with the Crunch, Erne recorded 41 goals and 47 assists. Erne also posted 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists) for the Crunch during their postseason run in 2016-17 which ended in defeat at the hands of the Grand Rapid Griffins in the Calder Cup Finals.

What This Means

With RFA Brayden Point in need of a new contract and the Tampa Bay Lightning only having $9.38 million in cap space, it was necessary for the Lightning to make a trade. Not to mention the Lightning currently have 49 contracts on the books. This comes after signing Kevin Shattenkirk to a one-year deal. As well, a team can only have 50 contracts on the books to start the season, so a move was eventually coming.

The Red Wings, on the other hand, have $4.57 million in cap space. Adam Erne is the only player needing a contract. Over the past three seasons, Erne carried a cap hit of $874,167. With his production last season, he was probably looking for a salary of over a million. Erne became expendable for the Lightning. Detroit has the cap space to sign the RFA to the deal he wants, while the Lightning can focus on getting a deal done for Point.

Update

In the hours following the trade, it was reported by CapFriendly that Erne signed a one-year deal with the Red Wings. The deal comes in at a $1.05 million cap hit, although Erne’s base pay is $905,000. The other $100,000 is provided through signing bonuses.

Detroit #RedWings have signed newly acquired F Adam Erne to a 1 year/1-way contract with an AAV of $1.05M ($950k Base + $100k SB).

Erne will once again be an RFA with Arb rights when his new deal expires next summer.https://t.co/GsUrbCKk3s https://t.co/JPXYfG1DdE

— CapFriendly (@CapFriendly) August 15, 2019

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images

The Detroit Red Wings have acquired forward Adam Erne from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2020 NHL Draft.
