The Devils acquired goaltender Louis Domingue in exchange for a conditional 2021 draft pick.

Key Element of The Deal

The Devils get a quality backup goaltender with natural puck stopping abilities along with some upside moving forward. Over his five-year NHL career, Domingue has played for Arizona Coyotes and Tampa Bay Lightning. He has put up a 55-49-8 career record in 122 career appearances with 108 of those coming in starts. He also has a 2.96 goals-against average, a .907 save percentage, and two shutouts. Domingue’s only Stanley Cup Playoff appearance came in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals vs Washington Capitals. He stopped all seven shots he saw in 18 minutes in net.

Last season, Domingue started 26 games for the Lightning. He put up an impressive 21-5 record with a 2.88 goals-against average and .908 save percentage. This was a career year for the 27-year-old goaltender along with his first winning season.

What This Means for the Future

Tampa Bay has been rumored to have Domingue on the block since they acquired Mike Condon from the Ottawa Senators in late July. The move originally left the Lightning with four goaltenders. They currently have two goalies on the active roster and two contracts buried in the minors.

With Domingue coming off a great year as a back-up expect him to be a big piece for his new club moving forward. Expect Domingue to stay in a back-up role as he has had little experience as a starter yet in the NHL. He still has one year remaining at $1.15 million.

It would appear that the Devils want to mix things up in the net. MacKenzie Blackwood has a 2-2-1 record and is only getting paid $675,000. The veteran Cory Schneider, 33 is struggling with 0-3-1 record and a poor .847 save percentage and an even worse 4.71 GAA. He is on a heavy $6 million deal until the 2022-23 season. It’s doubtful that they will keep three goalies on their roster.

So, who goes to the AHL, Blackwood or Domingue?

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images

The Tampa Bay Lightning have agreed to trade goaltender Louis Domingue to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a conditional 2021 seventh-round pick.
