However, what about some of the teams that don\u2019t exist anymore? There have been plenty of memorable teams that are no longer with us. Today we look at the Franchise Best season for the<\/span> 1984-85 <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_self\">Quebec Nordiques.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">History<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Quebec Nordiques were one of the original franchises of the World Hockey Association. The legendary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Maurice Richard<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>was even the team\u2019s first head coach for two games. Quebec would build an offensively powerful team led by<strong> J.C. Trombley<\/strong> and their group of stars.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Nordiques would win the Avco World Trophy in 1976-77, but the league was struggling. Owner Marcel Aubut checked on interest in the NHL and Quebec was part of the four teams that were accepted in the merger with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">Hartford Whalers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_self\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Quebec struggled in the early days after the merger but started to build a winner with young players like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/goulemi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michel Goulet<\/a> <\/strong>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stastpe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Peter Stastny<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> The <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nords<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> would be a consistent fixture in the Adams Division playoffs. However, they\u2019d have always run up against the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\"> Montreal Canadiens<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> because of the playoff structure. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Nordiques had made the conference final in 1981-82 but lost to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders.<\/a><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Quebec Nordiques 1984-85 Season<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Previous Season and Pre-Season Additions<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the previous season, the Nordiques made the post-season and beat the Buffalo <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sabres<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in the divisional semifinal. However, the rival Canadiens ended their season. That series included the infamous Good Friday Massacre where there were plenty of fights and numerous ejections. The epic brawl <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">spanned multiple periods and resulted in 11 ejections and 252 penalty minutes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">New assistant coach <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lapoigu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Lapointe<\/a> <\/strong>brought in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sevigri01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard Sevigny<\/a><\/strong> from the rival Habs. Quebec was quiet on the trade and free-agent front as it made only a few minor deals. The Nordiques traded cash to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> for<strong> Dan Wood<\/strong> and <strong>Richard <\/strong><\/span><strong>Zemlak<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>.<\/strong> They also got cash from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> as they sent <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cernifr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frantisek Cernik<\/a> <\/strong>to the Motor City.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Key Storylines<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Slow Start<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It wasn\u2019t a good start for Quebec as it got out of the gate with a 3-6-1 record and were in last place after the first month of the season. The Nordiques were mediocre at best for the first half of the season. They were 16-16-6 after 38 games and locked in a battle for third with the Bruins.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Flipping the Switch<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, things got better in the second half as Quebec only lost four games in February and March each. The Nordiques managed to pick up key wins over divisional rivals. They ended April with a 2-2 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">record but<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> had already sealed a place in the Stanley Cup playoffs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Quebec finished second in the Adams Division behind Montreal. But he was joined by brothers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stastan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Anton Stastny<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Marian <\/strong><\/span><strong>Stastny<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>.<\/strong> Peter reached 100 points in 75 games with 32 goals and 68 assists while Anton was third in points with 38 goals and 42 assists for 80 points. Marian chipped in with seven goals and 14 assists in 50 games.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The brotherly trio was important to Quebec\u2019s success after coming over from Czechoslovakia in the early 80s. However, the Flyers would end the series in six games.
