There are still plenty of free agents still on the board. Not to mention all the RFAs that still have yet to sign with their respective clubs. While the news may not be that exciting this deep into July, the rumour mill is still active as the off-season marches on. We&#8217;ll try to keep you up to date with the latest rumblings around the NHL. We look at the rumours surrounding <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pointbr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brayden Point<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcavoch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie McAvoy<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/connoky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Connor<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/ristora01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rasmus Ristolainen<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All NHL rumours are taken from the original source and are subject to change.<\/p>\n<h2>NHL Rumours<\/h2>\n<h2>NHL Rumours: Tampa Bay Lightning<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Rumour:<\/strong> <em>Joe Smith of the Athletic Tampa Bay reports there is nothing new on the Brayden Point front except. In a report Smith wrote, Point is open to wide of term, anything from a two-year bridge deal to a five-year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/matthau01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Auston Matthews<\/a>-type deal to an eight-year lockup.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Other than Brayden Point (nothing new on that front yet), the other main rostered <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/tblightning?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#tblightning<\/a> RFA not yet signed is Adam Erne. Erne did not file for arbitration by last week\u2019s deadline. Am told both sides just still working on a deal. Paquette, Martel, Verhaeghe signed last week<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Joe Smith (@JoeSmithNHL) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeSmithNHL\/status\/1148636013432115200?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 9, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>Analysis:<\/strong> Point like so many players on the Lightning love playing down in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_self\">Tampa<\/a>. Point&#8217;s loyalty was reportedly a factor in why <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2019\/07\/01\/montreal-canadiens-offer-sheet-sebastian-aho-of-carolina\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal GM <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bergema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc Bergevin<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2019\/07\/01\/montreal-canadiens-offer-sheet-sebastian-aho-of-carolina\/\" target=\"_self\"> decided to offer sheet Carolina&#8217;s RFA centreman, <\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=ahose01,ahose02&amp;search=Sebastian+Aho&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sebastian Aho<\/a><\/strong> on July 1. However, the big question for the Lightning will be cap space.<\/p>\n<p>Lightning GM <strong>Julien BriseBois<\/strong> still sees Point&#8217;s extension as a top priority. However, he like so many has to juggle the salary cap. The best thing for Point might just be a short-term bridge deal and wait until players like goaltender <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vasilan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrei Vasilevskiy<\/a><\/strong>, defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sergami01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mikhail Sergachev<\/a><\/strong>, and centre <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cirelan01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Cirelli<\/a> <\/strong>get their new extensions next summer.<\/p>\n<p>BriseBois already freed up funds by <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2019\/06\/22\/lightning-trade-jt-miller\/\" target=\"_self\">trading winger <\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/millejt01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.T. Miller<\/a><\/strong> to Vancouver and placing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/callary01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Callahan<\/a> on long-term injured reserve.<\/p>\n<h3>Boston Bruins<\/h3>\n<p>Rumour: <em>Pro Hockey Talk&#8217;s Adam Gretz <a href=\"https:\/\/nhl.nbcsports.com\/2019\/07\/16\/werenski-mcavoy-should-be-in-line-for-huge-contracts\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speculated<\/a> that Charlie McAvoy should be &#8220;in line for [a] huge contract&#8221; in one of his most recent articles. <\/em><em>NBC Sports Boston&#8217;s Joe Haggerty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/boston\/bruins\/mcavoy-really-line-huge-contract-bruins-maybe-not\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">believes<\/a> that may be a bold statement by Gretz, citing that McAvoy&#8217;s history with injuries might keep him from getting a much-desired lucrative pay raise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Analysis: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcavoch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Charlie McAvoy<\/strong><\/a> has been one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Bruins<\/a> best defencemen over the past couple of years. Since Ekblad signed his new contract all McAvoy has done is outpaced him offensively. If the report is true that McAvoy is looking for more than $7.5 million, that would make him the highest player on the Bruins.<\/p>\n<p>After losing in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>, McAvoy made a point of saying how much he loved playing in Boston and wanting to be a Bruin for life.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Charlie McAvoy on his future in Boston. He is an RFA this summer: \u201cI want to be here forever. &#8230; This is the best place on earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Conor Ryan (@ConorRyan_93) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ConorRyan_93\/status\/1139623968661524480?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 14, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Like so many players, McAvoy&#8217;s health is a cause for concern. He has yet to play in more than 63 games in a season as he has dealt with heart and concussion issues. With defenseman <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carlobr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Carlo<\/a><\/strong> also in need of a new contract and the Bruins only having $8.1 million in cap space for both something will have to give. Either McAvoy will sign a shorter-term deal or withhold his services until he gets what he wants.<\/p>\n<h3>Winnipeg Jets<\/h3>\n<p>Rumour:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PierreVLeBrun\/status\/1145774106517704704\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported<\/a> that rival clubs have reached out to Kyle Connor\u2019s camp, but that doesn\u2019t guarantee an offer sheet is forthcoming.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Analysis: Kyle Connor has put up back to back 30 goals seasons for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_self\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a>. Connor is coming off a career-high in goals (34), assists (32), and points (66). He was one of the lone bright spots for the Jets in their first-round exit to the Blues. Connor has shown he has great chemistry with on the top line with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/scheima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Scheifele<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wheelbl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blake Wheeler<\/a>.<\/strong> Connor has shown not only is he valuable on the power play but the penalty kill as well.<\/p>\n<p>With <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ehlerni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikolaj Ehlers<\/a><\/strong> making a team-friendly $6 million per season, does Connor get more? Better player <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/gojetsgo?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#gojetsgo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Andy Strickland (@andystrickland) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andystrickland\/status\/1124383143358865413?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 3, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>Buffalo Sabres<\/h3>\n<p>Rumour: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescore.com\/nhl\/news\/1798424\/5-players-who-could-still-be-traded-this-summer?fbclid=IwAR03YG-dizzveEXyuzo7YKvP6dq4TtlKhnKKBr6ddmHStbbowdUzEIorifE\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Score.com recently published an article<\/a> on five players that could still be traded this off-season and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/ristora01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rasmus Ristolainen<\/a>&#8216;s name was on it.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Analysis: Even as the trade winds swirl around Ristolainen, his departure out of Buffalo is merely just speculation. However, if you put the pieces together, his days with the Sabres could be numbered. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo\u00a0Sabres<\/a> recently went out and got themselves three more right-handed shot defencemen in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/montobr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Montour<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/milleco02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colin Miller<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jokihhe01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henri Jokiharju<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ristolainen will carry a salary-cap hit of $5.4 million over the next three seasons. Considering what defenceman make, Ristolainen&#8217;s salary is pretty good for teams that are looking to upgrade defensively. While he has some flaws defensively, Ristolainen is only 24 years old. It takes defencemen a little longer to develop in the NHL than forwards. Who wouldn&#8217;t want a defenseman who scores 40-points a season?
