However, what about some of the teams that don\u2019t exist anymore? There have been plenty of memorable teams that are no longer with us. Today we look at the Franchise Best season for the 1980-81 <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_self\">Minnesota North Stars<\/a>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">History<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The North Stars came into existence as part of the 1967 NHL expansion and almost made the Stanley Cup Final but lost to the St. Louis Blues. Minnesota made the playoffs four of the next five seasons before hitting a rough patch in the mid-1970s. They only made the post-season once between 1973-74 and 1979-80.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The North Stars beat back the challenge of the Minnesota Fighting Saints of the WHA for the hockey dollar in the state. Things got so bad that the team was merged with the Cleveland Barons in the 1978-79 season in an unprecedented move. The Gund family took control of the franchise and brought in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nannelo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lou Nanne<\/a><\/strong> and an infusion of talent from the Barons to the North Stars.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>1980-81 Minnesota North Stars<\/h2>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Previous Season and Pre-Season Acquisitions<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nanne<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> had started to lay the foundation for a winner as the North Stars stunned the defending champion <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> to get to the semi-finals. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Smith<\/a><\/strong> won the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year 1979 and<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/paynest01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Payne<\/a><\/strong> recorded 42 goals.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>Al McAdam<\/strong> helped complete the improbable series victory with the Game 7-winner. The North Stars lost to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> in the semifinals, but things were looking up after a dark period.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minnesota got<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pirusal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Pirus<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> in a trade in early <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">June but<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was flipped to the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\"> New York Islanders<\/a> on July 4. The North Stars picked up <strong>Bob <\/strong><\/span><strong>Nyrop<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Habs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on Sept. 1.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Second-round pick <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/beaupdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Don Beaupre<\/a> <\/strong>came in and split time with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/melocgi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gilles Meloche<\/a> <\/strong>in the net. Ciccarelli came into the fold and played 32 games for the North Stars. All the penalties caused the game to be played at a snail\u2019s pace. Most of the ejections happened with 11:02 left in the second period. Calgary and Minnesota had split the teams four regular-season meetings. The Isles netted at least six goals in the first three games.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The North Stars would get a home win with a 4-2 victory to stave off elimination, but the Islanders depth was too much in the end as they closed the series in five.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What Happened to the Minnesota North Stars?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A round of ownership moves saw the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gunds<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> end up with a stake in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_self\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> franchise. Part-owner Norm Green of the Flames swooped in and got 51-percent interest of the club.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The writing was on the wall and the club was moved to Dallas due to low attendance, the lack of a new arena and other factors. Green is still reviled in the Twin Cities for his move.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, the State of Hockey would get a new team in 2000-01 when the team was awarded an expansion franchise in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/wild\/\" target=\"_self\">Minnesota Wild<\/a>. Minnesota had flirted with bringing the original Winnipeg Jets to won, but that fell through.
