However, what about some of the teams that don\u2019t exist anymore? There have been plenty of memorable teams that are no longer with us. New England won its first and only Avco World Trophy in 1972-73 while located in Boston. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The team moved to Hartford after being low on the pecking order at the Boston Garden and Boston Arena. Hartford finished 13 points behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> for the last playoff spot in the divisional round.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/murzyda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dana Murzyn<\/a> <\/strong>was picked fifth overall by the Whalers and immediately made the team. Hartford signed free agent <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">centre<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/newbejo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Newberry<\/a> <\/strong>from the division rival <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens.<\/a> The Whalers also acquired <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">defenceman<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bothwti01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tim Bothwell<\/a> <\/strong>from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> for cash just before the start of the season. Hartford added left winger <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gavinst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stew Gavin<\/a><\/strong> from the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_self\"> Toronto Maple <\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Leafs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in exchange for <strong>Chris <\/strong><\/span><strong>Kotsopoulos<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Key Storylines<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Francis Gets a Hand<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Francis<\/a><\/strong> had been the one leading the scoring for the Whalers. However, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/turgesy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sylvain Turgeon<\/a><\/strong> stepped his game up and posted what would be his career-high in 45 goals. Teams couldn\u2019t just focus on Francis <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had to deal with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/ferrara01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Ferraro<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Francis still dished out 53 assists and was a key part of the Whalers offence. That extra help guided Hartford back to the post-season.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mid-Season Swoon<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, things got dicey for the Whalers around January and February. They went winless in 10 games, including an 0-7-1 start to the month of February. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The losing streak even put the Whalers into last place in the Adams Division. Hartford did beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_self\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a>, but then lost the next three games.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Late-Season Surge<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Whalers were able to turn into around and land in the playoffs with a strong March and April. Things looked bleak at first as they trailed the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sabres<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by six points for the final Adams Division berth on March 13.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hartford made a strong push and rallied past Buffalo with a 5-3 victory after falling behind 3-1 in an April 1 showdown. The Whalers closed out the season with three straight wins to nail down a post-season spot.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Top Scorers<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Turgeon, Francis and Ferraro each posted 77 points or better to pace the Whalers.<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dineeke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Dineen<\/a><\/strong> eclipsed the 30-goal mark with 33 markers to finish second on the team in goals. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gavin helped his new team immediately with 26 goals and 29 assists while <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/evasode01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dean Evason<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> totaled 20 goals and 28 assists for 48 points in 55 games.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In-Season Additions<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">General manager <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francem01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emile Francis<\/a> did a lot of tweaking to get the Whalers into the playoffs. He added Wayne <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Babych<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on January 17 and that kickstarted a five-game winning streak.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The club added<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gardnbi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Gardner<\/a> <\/strong>from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> in February and then <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Anderson<\/a> <\/strong>from Quebec and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcewemi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mike McEwan<\/strong><\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a>. Montreal then claimed the next two games before Hartford got an OT-winner 1:07 in from Dineen.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The two teams traded victories, including a 32-save performance from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Luit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Game 6 to force a deciding Game 7. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiecl01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Claude Lemieux\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">smashed the fledgling Whalers dreams with an overtime-winner to give the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Habs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a 2-1 victory.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Montreal would go on to win the Stanley Cup over the Calgary Flames. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roypa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Roy<\/a> <\/strong>won the Conn Smythe for playoff MVP.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What Happened to the Whalers?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hartford would win the Adams Division title the next season, but it was upset by Quebec in the first round. The Whalers would never reach the same heights of that 1985-86 season. Hartford would make the playoffs until the 1991-92 season, but never again in the city.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Peter Karmanos bought the team in 1994, but moved them to Raleigh, North Carolina after the 1996-97 season.
