The team made three pickups in the off-season, but there hasn\u2019t been a big signing. Yzerman hasn\u2019t made a deal just to land a big name and he\u2019s going to be patient.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Wings reached deals with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/filppva01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Valtteri Filppula<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nemetpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrik Nemeth<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pickaca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calvin Pickard<\/a><\/strong> on July 1. All three contracts were for two years.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Detroit is in the tough Atlantic Division and must deal with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple\u00a0 Leafs\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_self\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a>. However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_self\">Florida Panthers<\/a> made some big upgrades and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres <\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2019\/07\/06\/buffalo-sabres-sign-marcus-johansson\/\" target=\"_self\">made a couple of key signings<\/a>. The Vantaa, Finland native has been with the Lightning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_self\"> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Philadelphia Flyers <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> since then. The Swede is a stay-at-home defender that likes to throw his weight around. The Stockholm native can also drop the gloves and stick up for teammates. The Moncton, New Brunswick native has plenty of AHL experience and comes cheap at $700,000.
