It was announced Saturday that the Vancouver Canucks<\/a>\u00a0have bought out the remainder of\u00a0Ryan Spooner<\/strong><\/a>‘s contract. He had one year left on a two-year, $8 million deal he signed with the New York Rangers<\/a> on July 31, 2018. Since the Rangers retained salary when Spooner was traded to Edmonton<\/a>, the Rangers are on the hook for this buyout too. Spooner will cost the Canucks $1,033,333 for two seasons, while the Rangers will be responsible for $300,000 a year.<\/p>\n

Ryan Spooner Bought Out by Canucks<\/h1>\n

Spooner enters unrestricted free agency after a very up-and-down career. Over his seven-year NHL career, Spooner\u00a0has played for the\u00a0Boston Bruins<\/a>,\u00a0Rangers, Edmonton Oilers<\/a>, and Canucks. He has put up 48\u00a0goals and 119\u00a0assists for 167\u00a0career points in 325\u00a0career games. He was originally drafted in the 2nd round, 45th\u00a0overall of the 2010\u00a0NHL draft by the Bruins.<\/p>\n

Last season he scored three goals and six assists for nine points. He also added two minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 46.2 percent Corsi\u00a0and a relative Corsi of -0.7.<\/p>\n

What This Means for the Future<\/h2>\n

Spooner obviously had a terrible year coming off of a 41-point campaign with the Bruins and Rangers the season prior. He’s shown 40+ point potential if put in the right situation, and a team should be willing to take a gamble on him as he won’t be costing very much. Spooner will find a home soon.<\/p>\n

As for the Canucks, seeing Ryan Spooner bought out frees up cap space that they very much need. This decreases the effect (for this year, at least) of the recapture penalty imposed by\u00a0Roberto Luongo<\/strong><\/a>‘s retirement. The Canucks have been linked to many big fish free agents<\/a> as they try to re-enter the playoff realm, and this gives them some added flexibility.<\/p>\n
