He was originally drafted in the first round, 14th overall of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins and in return has put up 14 goals and 46 assists for 60 career points in 117 career games. He has added 16 points in 41 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Last season he scored seven goals and 21 assists for 28 points. He also added 45 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 54.1 percent Corsi-For and a relative Corsi of +1.0. McAvoy also put up two goals and eight points in 23 playoff games.

What This Means for the Future

The 21-year-old future is promising, McAvoy stepped up this year, particularly this playoff season, which saw the young defensemen’s toughness and offensive dependability hit a new career high. With the most regular season and playoff Time On Ice than any other Boston player, it is clear why the New York-born defender has been re-signed longer term.

Although his team failed to lift the coveted prize in Game 7 of this year’s Stanley Cup Final. It propelled the first round pick into ever-growing stardom. It is said McAvoy declined to extend his contract with the Bruins last offseason, mainly to improve his value. Now placed on the top defensive line with veteran Zdeno Chara, the young Boston University graduate has done just that. McAvoy has much to learn but is definitely, one to watch for the future.

The contract is similar to the deal the Columbus Blue Jackets gave to Zach Werenski. It’ll be a bridge deal to a possible bigger payday down the road. Boston now sets its sights on re-signing Brandon Carlo to a new deal.

Embed from Getty Images

The Boston Bruins re-sign top defenceman Charlie McAvoy to a three-year contract worth $14.7 million, or $4.9 million per season.
