The New York Rangers<\/a> have signed free agent defenceman Jacob Trouba<\/a><\/strong> to a 7-year contract worth $56 million, or $8 million per season. This contract carries him through the 2025-26 season.<\/p>\n

Jacob Trouba Signs With the Rangers<\/h1>\n

Last season, he scored eight goals and 42 assists for 50 points, adding 58 minutes in penalties with the Winnipeg Jets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His possession numbers were 49.2 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 0.7. Trouba has spent his entire six-year career in Winnipeg. In that time, he has 42 goals and 137 assists for 179 career points in 408 career games. The Jets originally drafted ninth overall of the 2012 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n

He was picked up in an off-season deal<\/a> that saw him go to New York in exchange for Neal Pionk<\/strong><\/a> on the 20th overall pick in the NHL Draft. The Jets actually got back the pick from the Rangers after they sent the pick to New York during the Kevin Hayes<\/a><\/strong> deal.<\/p>\n

What it Means for the Future<\/h2>\n

New York locks in a long-term defensive solution as it tries to accelerate the team’s rebuild. The team has already added<\/a> Adam Fox in the off-season and continues to make changes.<\/p>\n

General manager Jeff Gorton has made over the roster quickly and gotten out from under some bad contracts. The Rangers are young and looking to get back into the Metropolitan Division race.<\/p>\n

Trouba made $5.5 million last season in Winnipeg had filed for arbitration. The Rangers took care of that problem by giving him a new deal. He is a big body with a powerful shot and can be deadly on the power-play. He’s useful in an all situations on the ice.<\/p>\n
