The Claude Giroux Senators era lives on, at least for one more season anyway. After some uncertainty in the signing process, he is now back with the Ottawa Senators for the 2026-27 NHL campaign. Let’s discuss what this means for the Sens, you already know, it’s G Money, it’s time to get sensational.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBqTwZHqtx" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 8192px; aspect-ratio: 8192/5464;" ></smartframe-embed>

Credit Image: © Alex Cave/ZUMA Press Wire

Claude Giroux Senators Time in Ottawa

Now that Giroux is back, there is plenty to discuss. To that point, it is actually a really good thing that he signed with Ottawa, in the end. The reason is there had been the idea floating around that general manager Steve Staios had saved money for the purpose of re-signing Giroux, rather than spending dollars elsewhere in free agency. If Giroux did sign with the Philadelphia Flyers (or elsewhere), it is possible Staios would’ve missed out on utilizing that money on some sort of replacement for Giroux. Now we aren’t saying a Mason Marchment, Jack Roslovic, or Viktor Arvidsson level of player but maybe someone more like Patrick Kane or Vladimir Tarasenko. And hey, maybe there’s still time (rather money) for one of those more inexpensive options.

Moreover, we will add, you never know what you might get someone for if they believe in the group that they are signing with. Lots of older unrestricted free agents just want a chance to win, they’ve earned their money. Okay enough of that conjecture, now that Claude Giroux Senators is a thing, let’s focus on the roster outlook for 2026-27.

Let’s Look At Some Stats

How about this for a stat, from the Sens top 21 point scorers in 2025-26, all but four are with the team now. For those four players, with points in parenthesis, Brady Tkachuk was fourth (59), David Perron was 14th (25) and he was traded during last season, Nick Jensen was 17th (17), and Lars Eller was 18th (15). As a note, Nick Jensen wasn’t really a part of the Sens top-three defence pairings going forward anyhow.

Now, if let’s narrow our focus on Tkachuk and Eller specifically. What if we bring Andre Burakovsky and William Eklund into the discussion and explain their perceived replacement value. Remember, we are just talking regular season offence here. If the Sens want to be mixing in Kurtis MacDermid or Hayden Hodgson for tough divisional games with the Montreal Canadiens or Florida Panthers, you’re going toe-to-toe anyway, the skill guys will still have to battle it out, on the scoreboard. It’s the idea you are making it a three-line game somewhat. Therefore, for your top-10 forwards, or so, you just need to outscore your opponent, or in our case, the 2025-26 Sens lineup.

2025-26 Stats – CF% EV – P/60 EV – Pts

Tkachuk – 58.0% – 2.8 – 59

Eller – 46.7% – 1.2 – 15

Burakovsky – 46.6% – 1.3 – 33

Eklund – 51.3% – 1.9 – 53

If you look at the stats, analytically it’s difficult not to give the Tkachuk-Eller duo a slight edge. Tkachuk is known to be excellent at generating offence, and it shows with the high Corsi value. In contrast, he is known to be a very inefficient scorer, and you see it in the dislocation between his Corsi and his actual point totals. That is where someone like Eklund is probably more efficient and that might turn out to be a significant positive when it comes to meshing with superstar Tim Stutzle.

The New Claude Giroux Senators Replacement Value

Another point is that Burakovsky played on an offensive line with youngsters Connor Bedard and Ryan Greene. He was counted on to provide some responsibility in their games on the defensive side of the puck, and it shows in his low Corsi rating. On Ottawa, he will be deployed in much more of a depth role. And the bottom line is, throw analytics out the window for a second, and Burakovsky and Eklund outscored Tkachuk and Eller 86 to 74 in 2025-26.

What you may lose in Eklund in replacement value versus Tkachuk, it does appear you make up for in Burakovsky (say over Eller). Again, why the Claude Giroux Senators signing has such a good feeling about it. It is in having that bottom-six faceoff guy, that you might’ve had a gap in losing Eller. But with Giroux you have that taken care of.

If they want to add, it might be better to a gritty guy for the fourth line, but guys like Cousins and Halliday are there for that purpose. Maybe Tarasenko’s skill, Stanley Cup experience, and star power would be the perfect fit for Pinto on the third line. But for today, with a Claude Giroux Senators reunion, the forward group appears to be slightly better than they were last year. And hey, we didn’t even mention all the Sens core that are still getting (Stutzle, Pinto, Greig, Batherson, Cozens, and the beat goes on, dun dun dun dun). Job well done Giroux, Staios, and crew.

Main Photo Credit: Sergei Belski-Imagn Images

It’s time for everyone to get excited.
