On July 5th, defenceman Braden Schneider filed for arbitration after receiving a qualifying offer from the Rangers as a restricted free agent. However, when Adam Fox went down and was forced to miss extended time, Schneider was moved up to a top-pairing role alongside Vladislav Gavrikov. Schneider struggled significantly in this role and was a main contributor to the Rangers’ 2025-26 slump season as a whole. It wasn’t until Fox returned that Schneider found his footing again, when he was back to his comfortable third-pairing role.

It seems the team is hoping to keep Schneider in a steady third-pairing role in the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Defensive Core Locked In

Currently New York Rangers Defense Depth #NYR pic.twitter.com/9npxyUlF2C

— Talkin’ Rangers (@talkin_rangers) July 1, 2026

There is now a clear picture of the New York Rangers defensive core for the 2026-27 season. Adam Fox and Vladislav Gavrikov remain the top pair, while Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson project as the second pairing. With this signing, Schneider is locked in to pair with either Matthew Robertson or 2026 fifth-overall draft pick Alberts Šmits on the third pair, leaving names like Scott Morrow and Vincent Iorio unlikely to be starters in the opening-night lineup.

Looking Ahead

Given this is only a one-year contract extension, Braden Schneider’s future with the team is very uncertain. The team actively shopped their defenceman around throughout this offseason but ultimately didn’t receive any offers of interest.

Just before the signing, general manager Chris Drury had this to say when asked about the possibility of trading Braden Schneider.

“We think Braden is a really good young talented defenceman.
