On Friday, Dolan and MSG announced that Quentin Dolan, James’s 32-year-old son, will take over as Rangers president, chief operating officer, and alternate governor. This marks the first step in James Dolan’s succession plan, taking place at a strategic time given the New York Rangers status and the major shake-up that has occurred recently.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBhTm4gaEE" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4206px; aspect-ratio: 4206/2804;" ></smartframe-embed>

Credit Image: © Kostas Lymperopoulos/Cal Sport Media

What Actually Changed at MSG

Quentin Dolan now holds the titles of president, COO, and alternate governor of the New York Rangers and their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. General manager Chris Drury must now directly report to Quentin instead of his father, James. However, James Dolan remains the CEO of MSG Sports and keeps full control of the New York Knicks after this move.

Quentin’s resume consists of roles in player performance and science, where he served a senior role for both the Rangers and Knicks. He found himself working specifically in strength and conditioning, medical, and nutrition operations. That’s a notable gap in his resume for a new team president with zero prior experience in organizational management. However, Quentin is very young, 32 years of age, leaving plenty of opportunity in the years to come to immerse himself in the role.

Quentin addressed his new role to the New York Post’s Mollie Walker:

“I’m honoured to have this opportunity to ensure our hockey operations staff, coaches, and players have all the support they need.”

He also admitted the learning curve ahead of him:

“I think it’s something I’ve been building towards, and I’ll be working my hardest and probably proving to myself for a while that I’m ready.”

General manager Chris Drury also talked about the change:

“Quentin and I have worked together for several years, and I believe him taking on this role will only make the Rangers organization stronger.”

There is a lot of acknowledgment and belief within the Rangers staff of Quentin. It might take time for Quentin to adjust to the role, but Drury and staff believe he is ready for the challenge.

What This Means For the Road Ahead

Rangers fans have spent the better part of two seasons watching James Dolan’s impatience shape the organization, forcing a “win-now mentality” onto the Rangers staff. Drury has absorbed the brunt of that pressure, forcing him to make decisions he may not do of his own accord. And a change in who he answers to is a direct change in his job security.

While Drury’s job security status may be unknown, it is known that Quentin will lean on Drury rather than second-guess him given his inexperience and young age. This now gives the general manager more room to let the current retool play out under his own vision rather than James’s win-now mentality. Rangers fans will see what Drury does given this opportunity, although he has already shifted the Rangers lineup on Draft Day and free agent signing day, July 1st.

What Comes Next for Drury and the Rangers

Rangers fans should watch the next few months leading up to the season closely to see how much leeway general manager Chris Drury gets given this leadership change. Much of the results of this change won’t show up in a press release, but rather internally with the relationship between Drury and authority. This could mean a lot for the future of Chris Drury’s job, depending on how Quentin and he work together this upcoming season. It may be in the interest of Quentin and James Dolan to start fresh if this retool fails and the relationship between the two does not succeed.

Main Photo Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images

James Dolan, CEO of the Madison Square Garden Company, announces he will be officially stepping down from running the everyday operations of the New York Rangers.
