He was originally the 20th-overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. The organization was hoping his skill and offensive abilities would translate well to the NHL game. Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out so seamlessly for him at the NHL level, thus far.

So far in 58 career NHL games, he has just 12 points. Interestingly enough, five of those 12 points came in his first eight games the fall after he was drafted. They know the potential is there, they just need confidence in him. He has also had some solid seasons down in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose. He just couldn’t quite crack the Jets lineup with consistency. However, after all this time of paying his dues, Vegas is willing to give him a shot and see if he can make the most out of skills, and become an NHL regular at this point of his career. For Vegas, at this cost for the player, and with the depth they already have, it is a win-win scenario.

Vegas was busy today, as they gave Rasmus Andersson a big, seven-year contract. The also signed defenceman Dylan Coghlan to a two-year extension. So, they have plenty of depth on the blueline. Heinola brings a bit of upside and untapped potential. If he is sheltered a bit by the top pairings, maybe he can find his rhythm offensively, and become a regular in the Vegas lineup.

Main Photo Credit: Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

With another signing on today’s free agent frenzy, the Vegas Golden Knights add a little depth to their blueline.
