The former Blues great takes over the GM duties on the eve of July 1 free agency. Steen replaces longtime general manager Doug Armstrong in the post. The former Blues forward also totaled 36 points in 91 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Steen had tabbed as Armstrong&#8217;s successor, and he&#8217;ll have a hard act to follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Armstrong was the builder of the 2019 Blues team that beat the Boston Bruins for the Stanley Cup. The longtime general manager has been mentoring Steen the last two seasons in order to prepare him for the job.<\/p>\n<p>It looked like Steen hit the ground running in his first day on the job. He <span>tendered qualifying offers to <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcmicco01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor McMichael<\/a> and defenceman\u00a0<\/span>Leo Loof<span>\u00a0and placed forward\u00a0<\/span><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/drouijo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Drouin<\/a><span> on waivers. St Louis also picked up <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mctavma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mason McTavish<\/a> and <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carlobr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Carlo<\/a> via trade. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Blues also reportedly signed <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/berggjo02.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonatan Berggren<\/a> to a one-year deal worth $2 million according to ESPN&#8217;s Emily Kaplan. Berggren was not given a qualifying offer. The Blues finished four points behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2026\/06\/26\/brandt-clarke-signs-fa-2026\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> for the final Western Conference playoff spot. However, the Blues don&#8217;t seem to be content with a slow rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that the Blues do have to deal with is the division they are in. St Louis is stuck in the loaded Central Division with tough teams like the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2026\/06\/26\/colorado-avalanche-signings\/\" target=\"_self\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> and the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2026\/06\/30\/minnesota-wild-and-bobby-brink-contract-came-down-to-the-wire\/\" target=\"_self\"> Minnesota Wild<\/a> standing in its way.<\/p>\n<p>The Blues are trying to make all the right moves to get themselves back in the postseason mix.
