Let’s look at who Detroit ultimately selected to try and understand why the trade made sense to the respective sides. Therefore, it is somewhat surprising that the Wings moved on from him. Maybe it is a timetable thing, as Cossa should be ready to step into the NHL level this season, based purely on the timing of his career projection.

Cossa has put up solid numbers at the AHL level, and has likely progressed onto the NHL. In each of the last three seasons, he has played a minimum of 39 games, and recorded a goals-against average of 2.45 or lower. He is still just 23 and Utah has high hopes that he pans out, and soon. If he does, it could be a spot of regret for general manager Steve Yzerman and crew. As of now, John Gibson is Detroit’s only goalie under contract exclusively at the NHL level for 2026-27. However, each of Trey Augustine and Michal Postava are signed to two-way deals, so either of them may be given the opportunity to back Gibson up in 2026-27.

The Pick for Detroit

As for the 23rd pick, the Wings had confidence in their selection. J.P. Hurlbert, the Texan product, had a big draft season. He had been trained by the US National Team Development Program, but decided to go to the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers, for the 2025-26 campaign. It was definitely the right decision as he posted 42 goals, 55 assists, for a total of 97 points in 68 games. He now plans to head to the University of Michigan Wolverines and try to grow his game to the NHL level.

JP Hurlbert goes 23rd to the Detroit Red Wings #2026NHLDraft

— Last Word On Hockey (@LastWordOnPuck) June 27, 2026

Main Photo Credit: Jamie Sabau-Imagn Images

The Detroit Red Wings must have had their eyes on the man available, because they shipped their goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa off to Utah.
