It was the furthest they went in the playoffs since 2007. They had a couple of core groups of players to help them get that far. The older core including players like Rasmus Dahlin, Tage Thompson, Alex Tuch, and Jason Zucker. The other core included multiple young players that the Sabres developed through their system. According to one report, the Sabres are close to an extension with one of the more important long-term pieces to their team.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB3iOiRPq0" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2871px; aspect-ratio: 2871/1914;" ></smartframe-embed>

Credit Image: © Kostas Lymperopoulos/Cal Sport Media

NHL Rumours and Buffalo Extending Zach Benson

Rumour: According to ESPN insider Kevin Weekes, Buffalo is nearing a seven-year extension with 21-year-old forward Zach Benson.

https://www.twitter.com/KevinWeekes/status/2068023429312164256

Analysis: Benson made himself a top priority for Jarmo Kekalainen with his postseason play. Benson had career highs in the regular season in goals, assists and plus/minus. Benson accomplished those feats playing in just 65 games this season, a career low. The young forward was also quite the contributor in the postseason, with five goals and nine points in 13 playoff games. While the young man is still just 21, he now has 211 regular season games under his belt.

What a Benson Extension Means for the Young Core

The Sabres were bottom feeders in the league for years. The rebuild in Buffalo is officially over, and they’re starting to see the fruits off years of disappointment. Benson has been a full time NHL player since he was drafted into the league. Josh Doan also showed great signs of promise in his first year in Buffalo. Noah Ostlund and Konsta Helenius are also showing solid NHL potential. They Sabres are in a great position when it comes to their young talent, and Benson is a massive piece to that.

Benson is your prototypical playoff player. Despite his size, he is a monster in the corners, works incredibly hard, and creates chances offensively. He was consistently one of the best players for Buffalo in their series against Montreal. When guys like Thompson and Tuch failed to meet the moment, Benson looked heroic. Buffalo fans should be ecstatic to have Benson in Buffalo long term. He’s be the second young piece to extend in Buffalo, with Doan signing a seven-year extension earlier this season.

An INCREDIBLE effort by Zach Benson and he gets rewarded with a goal! 🚨

The @BuffaloSabres are on the board! #StanleyCup

🇺🇸: @NHL_On_TNT
🇨🇦: @Sportsnet & @TVASports pic.twitter.com/tGuPeuqTEY

— NHL (@NHL) May 9, 2026

The Hypothetical AAV for a Benson Extension

Per Kevin Weekes reporting, the Sabres are looking to get Benson signed for seven years and around seven million per year. That number would be an absolute steal for Buffalo moving forward. Benson is only going to get better, he drives so much offence for the Sabres already. He can play anywhere in the lineup. He was playing in the preseason on the top line with Joshua Norris and Thompson. They were dominant in preseason before Norris and Benson sustained injuries in the first game of the regular season.

Benson also found himself playing on the fourth line at times this year when he was returning from injury. He used his skill to add to the top line and his grit and playmaking to fit in on the fourth line. Moreover, the Sabres won’t want to have him on the fourth line if they sign him to this extension, but it’s nice to know he could play there if for some reason they needed him to.

Benson dealt with a wild face infection injury that side lined him in the opening parts of the season. He still managed to play 65 regular season games. Which was a career low for him. He played 70 plus in each of the two seasons before that. Benson had 13 goals and 43 points in his third season. A full year in the top line and on the power play should see those numbers jump. All around great value for a player making only $7 million.

The Cap Effects of a Benson Extension

A Benson extension would eat up most of the cap space for the Sabres heading into next season. Per puckpedia.com, the Sabres have roughly $12 million in cap space heading into next season. With the Benson extension kicking in, that would drop that number to around $5 million. The biggest piece would be Tuch. Tuch is the top pending unrestricted free agent of the offseason, and it grows increasingly unlikely the Sabres cna sign him.

With Benson extended, the Sabres will have to move some money out if they want to keep their 33 goal scorer from last season. Either way, General Manager Kekalainen has work to do. But Sabres fans should be very happy to keep Benson around in Buffalo for years to come. Especially if they can get the deal done at the number Kevin Weekes suggested. Benson is the second domino of their young core to fall, and in years to come we’ll see if the Sabres sign or trade their other young pieces.

Main Photo Credit: Eric Bolte-Imagn Images

The Buffalo Sabres made it to Game 7 of the second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, losing out to the Montreal Canadiens in a hard-fought series.
