We’re now into the offseason and that means we’re ramping up the hot stove chatter. The NHL Draft and the start of free agency will be upon us soon. However, moves are already being made in the lead up to the offseason. We may also see several players sign contract extensions to take themselves off the market. This may also give the player a sense of security, so they can focus on hockey.

One team that’s looking to take care of an important player is the New Jersey Devils. This edition of NHL rumours deals has an update between the Devils and Nico Hischier.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

NHL Rumours

Latest on Talks Between New Jersey Devils and Nico Hischier

Rumour: We sift through the latest between the Devils and the former number one draft pick. Multiple insiders are reporting that the Swiss standout is more likely to sign an extension instead of being moved.

Analysis: There had been some chatter that the Devils may consider dealing the 27-year-old centre. New Jersey had to wait things out until it named Sunny Mehta as the team’s new general manager. Hischier had been his named tossed around in recent trade talks.

The Swiss forward is heading into the last year of a contract that sees him making $7.25 million per season. Hischier can sign a contract extension of July 1 since he’s entering the last year of his contract, but there was also concern he may not want to re-sign. This could have led to a scenario where the Devils may have had to trade him instead of letting him walk away for nothing.

However, it looks like newer reports have the veteran forward staying put on the Rock. Chris Johnston said recently that he’s comfortable declaring that Hischier is more likely to stay with the Devils. The insider added that there has been some real progress made between the two sides.

Devils fans may be able to breathe a bit easier with one of their important players likely to stay put. This edition of NHL rumours will dive into the latest talk regarding these contract talks.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB5obdqLHv" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4132px; aspect-ratio: 4132/2755;" ></smartframe-embed>

(Credit Image: © Luis Santana/Tampa Bay Times via ZUMA Press Wire)

What It Means

TSN’s Darren Dreger first mentioned there had been some forward momentum in talks between the New Jersey and its captain. Dreger appeared on The Morning Show with Starr and McKenna recently to give an update on the negotiations.

The longtime insider mentioned the Devils are “pretty deep” into talks with Hischier. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic also reported that talks between Mehta and Hischier’s agent, Alain Roy, are amicable. However, LeBrun is quick to add that a new deal is going to see a significant raise and that’s even with the Devils getting some kind of a hometown discount.

Despite the raise, LeBrun indicated talks over through the meaty part of talks. Teams that were hoping Hischier would be available are moving on from him. Some clubs were hoping that the Devils couldn’t make the math work, However, there seems to be momentum in talks and one of the big-ticket items on some team’s wish list will likely come off the market.

One of the main questions is how much Hischier will get for an average cap hit. It’s likely that the Swiss pivot will be getting over eight figures for a base salary. Former NHL goalie and current insider Kevin Weekes thinks that Hischier will sign mid-length deal with an average value of $11 million to $13 million per season. It may be a hefty raise, but Hischier has been playing like he’s worthy of it.

Main photo by: John Jones – Imagn Images

It’s time for some more NHL rumours.
