The Olympic gold medal winning forward is hot commodity on teams looking to get into contention or solidify their lineup.

Analysis: Trocheck has seen his name bandied about in previous editions of NHL rumours. There was plenty of speculation that Trocheck would have been dealt by the Blueshirts at the March trade deadline. However, the Rangers didn’t find the right deal in time.

We’ll start with Vincent Mercogliano of The Athletic and what he’s been hearing about a trade. A recent appearance on The Flying V revealed that general manager Chris Drury would love to get a young player that can contribute right away. It seems that Drury wants to start accelerating the roster’s retooling. On that same appearance, Mercogliano mentioned that teams like the Minnesota Wild, Carolina Hurricanes, Boston Bruins and others have been talked about.

In a piece in The Athletic, Mercogliano added that Trocheck wants to stay close to the East Coast. The veteran forward is a Pittsburgh native, and the Penguins were also mentioned as a landing spot. Trocheck’s desire to stay close to home as likely ruled out teams like the Utah Mammoth and the Los Angeles Kings. According to Mercogliano, both teams checked in on Trocheck at points last season.

The Wild may have backed off on their pursuit of Trocheck with Dylan Larkin as a possible trade target. However, the Wild could circle back to Trocheck if Minnesota doesn’t acquire Larkin.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB0ocr3oXj" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

(Credit Image: © Scott Rausenberger/ZUMA Press Wire)

What It Means

Michael Russo of The Athletic was the one that mentioned the Wild have backed off on their pursuit of Trocheck due to younger options possibly wanting to play in Minnesota. Russo said general manager Bill Guerin was hoping for a name like Larkin, Auston Matthews, Robert Thomas, and Nico Hischier could find their way to the Twin Cities.

There has been conflicting information about one Eastern Conference team that might be interested in Trocheck. Insider Chris Johnston said the Montreal Canadiens might go after Trocheck or Thomas to address the team’s centre depth. Johnston, who made his point on his own Chris Johnston Show, said the Habs would likely try to get a deal taken care of prior to training camp.

However, Mercogliano said the Canadiens have not checked in on Trocheck. The writer added that there hasn’t been contact between the two clubs according to a league source. Conflicting information will often come out, and people will hear different things. If Montreal hasn’t contacted New York about Trocheck, that could all change with just one phone call.

The Rangers know they have to make some changes and have plenty of cap space to weaponize in the offseason. It seems like the club wants to get younger and getting Trocheck’s contract off the books will help out with that goal.

Main photo by: Dennis Schneidler-Imagn Images

It’s time for another round of NHL rumours.
